LARGO — An investigation is underway after a Pinellas County jail inmate was found unresponsive in his bed early Saturday and later died at a hospital.

Detention deputies who tried to wake up 66-year-old Alfred Woodard for breakfast found him unresponsive in his bed, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

Woodard was taken to Northside Hospital in St. Petersburg, deputies said, where his condition deteriorated. He was pronounced dead at 7:38 a.m.

Deputies said Woodard’s death does not appear to be suspicious. The Pinellas-Pasco Medical Examiner’s will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Woodard was booked into the jail on Dec. 2 after St. Petersburg police arrested him on charges of petty theft and trespassing, according to the Sheriff’s Office. He was being held in lieu of $1,150 bail, according to jail records.
