Seahawks to sign running back Carlos Hyde - Houston Chronicle

Veteran free-agent running back Carlos Hyde on Friday agreed to terms on a contract with the Seattle Seahawks, a league source confirmed to SeattlePI.

The deal is for one year and worth up to $4 million, according to the NFL Network.

Hyde, 29, fills the Seahawks’ need for a veteran tailback with the injury and depth concerns in the backfield. Both Chris Carson (hip) and Rashaad Penny (ACL) saw season-ending injuries in 2019.

Seattle expects Carson to be ready by Week 1 of the upcoming season, but there’s a chance Penny begins the year on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. If Penny’s on PUP to start the regular season, he can’t play or practice for the first six weeks of the season. That possibility emphasized the need for an experienced back that can complement Carson.

Hyde rushed for a career-high 1,070 yards last season with the Houston Texans, the first time he’s crossed the 1,000-yard threshold.

A 2014 second-round pick, Hyde spent the first four seasons of his career with the San Francisco 49ers (2014-17) and split the next season between the Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars (2018) before joining Houston in 2019.

The Seahawks come to terms with Hyde after their deal with another free-agent back, Devonta Freeman, reportedly fell through. Seattle offered Freeman a one-year contract worth up to $4 million, according to multiple reports — the same deal Hyde is getting — but Freeman turned it down. The former Atlanta Falcons star had been seeking a more lucrative deal, according to multiple news outlets.

So Seattle turned to Hyde, who happens to be coming off a breakout season at age 29.

The Seahawks currently have seven running backs in the fold for 2020: Carson, Penny, Hyde (who’s yet to sign), second-year pro Travis Homer, rookie fourth-round pick DeeJay Dallas (Miami) and undrafted rookies Anthony Jones (FIU) and Patrick Carr (Houston). Seattle also has a fullback, Nick Bellore.

Seattle will have to waive a player to make room for Hyde on the 90-man offseason roster.
