GUNNISON, Colo. It's been a few years, but Western Colorado University football — ranked No. 11 in the American Football Coaches Association poll (Nov. 15) and the 2021 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference co-champions — will enjoy on Saturday its first trip into the NCAA postseason since 1997.
The third-seeded Mountaineers will welcome the University of Nebraska–Kearney at 1 p.m. to the Mountaineer Bowl, a stadium that will host its first postseason game since the 1991 season.
MOUNTAINEERS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | STATS 2021
- Western closed out its regular season on Nov. 13 with a 14-7 RMAC win over visiting Colorado State University Pueblo, finishing the schedule with a 10-1 record overall and an 8-1 league mark.
- The Mountaineers reached the Thunderwolves' Red Zone only twice, but cashed in both times, and both in the second quarter. James Bryant snagged a Connor Desch pass in the back of the end zone for a 3-yard TD catch early in the quarter, and then with 5:40 remaining before halftime it was Josh Cummings with a 3-yard TD run off the left side.
- Pueblo accumulated nearly all of its yardage in the air, including a 90-yard catch and run for a third-quarter TD, but the Western defense clamped down after that score. The Pack's remaining drives in the game ended with punt, punt, turnover on downs, punt and punt.
- Cummings finished the game with that one TD and 119 yards on the ground, while Desch connected with eight different receivers for 160 yards and the TD toss to Bryant.
- Averaging 107.5 yards a game, Cummings is second in the RMAC in rushing, as are also his 16 TDs.
- The Mountaineer defense visits opposing backfields often. Lane Farris' 1.50 tackles for a loss per game are second in the RMAC, and Will Lydle's 1.36 TFLs are fourth. Lydle has 9.5 sacks so far this season, second most in the conference, while Farris adds 8.5 sacks to Western's season total of 46.
- Nebraska-Kearney finished the season with a 9-2 record and enters Saturday's game ranked No. 21 in the AFCA poll. It ended the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) season second in the league standings with a 9-2 conference mark.
- The Lopers are led by quarterback TJ Davis, the MIAA 2021 Offensive Player of the Year. Davis is second in the league in rushing, averaging 94.5 yards a game, and is ninth in the MIAA in passing averaging 186.5 yards per game.
- Davis has rushed for 16 TDs and thrown for 21 more, against only 5 interceptions. He has also caught one TD pass and kicked one extra points.
- The Lopers offense, steered by Davis, is averaging 36.3 points per game, and their defense is allowing 23.5 PPG.
- UNK's defense takes its lead from Darius Swanson, who has accumulated 83 tackles during the season. A first team MIAA safety this season, Swanson has also recorded seven pass breakups and intercepted opposing QBs three times.
- Western and Nebraska–Kearney are no strangers to each other. The Lopers were part of the RMAC from 1994 to 2012 before leaving to join the MIAA. UNK won its last six meetings against the Mountaineers before its departure.
- The winner of Saturday's game will advance to the second round where it will play the winner of the first-round game between No. 2 seed Angelo State University (Texas) and the University of Minnesota Duluth.
- If Western defeats the Lopers and Minn. Duluth wins, the Nov. 20 Round 2 game would be at the Mountaineer Bowl.
