Parkland head football coach Derek Bryant and senior defensive back Jaxon Monell spoke with HighSchoolOT Triad reporter Zack Adams to discuss the fall 2021 season that begins in less than one month. The Mustangs were 0-6 overall during the previous spring campaign, but are moving up classification beginning this fall.
Welcome back to high school t. I'm Zach Adams and I'm joined by a Parkland head football coach, Derek Bryant as well as Parkland Senior defensive back Jackson Manel. I thank you all for joining me this morning guys. Thank you, appreciate you having us Any time. So our first question is for you coach. The short in high school football season that was completed in the spring time. I led to an untraditional offseason, like most things since March of 2020, not normal. So I share how Parkland has gone about the summer months since early April when the spring campaign finished. So with this short amount of time, uh, we really relied on our, our seniors are experienced guys to, to drive things and to lead us to in the direction that they wanted to go. Um, and we've really focused more uh, on as far as the weight room are heavy lifting, uh, making sure guys get in what they need to get in a short amount of time. But the biggest thing for us is we want to become more of a team and a family from last year. So uh, having same color t shirt, same size, same color shorts, uh, team bonding, uh, things, whatever we could do in the short amount of time that it allows us to create a bond is like you said, we, we usually have a longer amount of time to do so, but whatever we could do to become closer, that was our biggest focus. So Jackson, just, what have you been doing to remain in a quote unquote football shape since the last football season ended, while also getting some down time to rest for a regular, attend to 11 game season in the fall. Yeah, for me personally, I have my own trainer, so I always work out at least 3-4 times a week with him other than my own practice at Parkland. Um, I make sure I do every single thing, especially with conditioning lifting. Um, to get my speed up, build my stamina because I know my team needs me on both sides of football, so I gotta make sure I'm in better shape possible to help them out. So I coach the upcoming season would be your second as Parklands head football coach. Just describe the process that you and your assistance went through with attempting to establish a culture at Parkland given the covid 19 circumstances and restrictions that were in place during the, I think you mean when you said it was difficult trying to get everyone in our program on the same page in a short amount of time, especially to hire, getting a good staff together and just trying to get our kids who, you know, technically are in the building. Uh when we first started, I was a little troubling and I've been very fortunate, uh this this spring and going into this summer, having our leaders and having our coaches and things opening back up to be able to get hands on our kids and a lot of the players who maybe didn't play last year or we didn't see because in the school building, having them come out has been tremendous health and uh, you know, I've been very, very grateful and thankful for what these guys have sacrificed this summer, uh to accomplish our goals. We got set before us, uh coach apartment. I did go in six overall in a three day conference that included Mount Tabor and Dudley, two teams that were in the three Ws final and the eventual state champion with Tabor no victories, but I just want some takeaways for a first year coaching staff. Yeah, the biggest thing was us trusting them and them trusted us. Um because like I said, we didn't have a traditional season like everybody else did. Um and and getting those guys to understand our thinking and and understanding what they do well and they don't do well. Um and we were tremendous amount of time together on the field and and doing a lot of things that we didn't get the opportunity to do. Um and and really letting these guys do what they do best and and understanding what with our staff, the majority of not being from this area, just allowing guys like Jackson and a few of our other players to uh let us learn the system here, the city here and uh what is it for us to be successful? I saw Jackson, it was a difficult season in terms of record for the mustangs, but you are one of four Parkland players that made The people try at three a all conference team after making 63 tackles and breaking up seven passes. We'll talk about what that honor means to you personally, given all that went into even having a spring football season. You know what means a lot man. I started playing football real technical on my ninth grade year and I wasn't really into it as much. No, my living grade year, I had to step up big because of the covid and the circumstances we had, we don't have too many players. So for me, I felt like I had to be great. I had to help my team win and do the best we can do the best I can to help them with. And you know, it's a blessing to be able to be able to say I made all conference and hopefully I can make all state this year and do even better. So a coach, the offense struggled in six regular season games that were played, but I scored 14 points in the finale, a 32-14 defeat to Ben L. Smith. Um, it was a losing effort, but did that provide any sort of quote unquote springboard for those athletes returning to see hard work? Finally pay off? Absolutely. I think the biggest thing is, uh, going into his last games this season, it was more trust on both ends with players and coaches. Um, and that allow us to really be able to set the tone for the off season. Um, and having a different mindset. You know, even the simple things is, you know, being on time to the weight room or uh, you know, giving your all for each other during practice. Uh and I think that, you know, we had a seven on 72 weeks ago and I think that, you know, a lot of our team was able to see, you know, the progress and the strategy that we've made uh coming out of that with a lot of younger players and guys who haven't played before too. So now like Jackson happened to be the guy on our team and and other players step up. Um and you know, that that's been very, very uh interesting to see and be a part of Coach besides the Jack Arizona offense, defense and special teams that will be important for the mustangs and the fall of 2021 campaign. Mhm. Yeah, so uh Tomorrow di uh is a guy who came on late with us. Uh he was here when he started to strike a springboard late. Um as for as well as uh Omari Cobb was an explosive guy. Uh two or three touchdowns callback last year and stepped up at the end of the team last year to replace a lot of the entries that we have and uh you know, we're looking forward to those guys joining him on our all conference list um and doing really good things this upcoming season. So Jackson, of course, uh Covid is not officially behind us yet, but I just how excited are you for just more normalcy, seeing more fans in the stands and I'm not having to wear face coverings while playing. Hopefully that will be a blessing man. I was I was struggling. We're having the wrestling mask up after every single play. It was hard to breathe, you know, especially going both sides of the ball. But I'm really glad that we're gonna have more people in the stands be cheering and so on. Home and away. Of course, that's always been. I think for me, I love the crowd. I love giving the level when they give me energy. I love giving them energy. I'm just ready for it. I'm ready for everything to be. So you could get the shit, uh, coach. This conference features at county easter site, Glenn, Mount Tabor, R. J. Reynolds, Reagan and Western sites. I'm a very competitive league, but just how excited is Parkland to, uh, move up a classification and I play a quote, unquote closer, uh, team since most are in the county now, we're very excited. Uh, you know, most would see it as a challenge. We see it as an opportunity to be able to showcase to our city, uh, you know, what we're capable of doing. Um, and you know, like I said, I can't stress, uh, too much of how hard these guys have worked. Um, and we're excited for our first game versus South Roland and, and us having a Tv game this year. Uh, you know, everything that we're doing is it's really coming to fruition and we set out a bunch of goals for this season, starting with coming out one of the game one, Uh, Johnson, what are you looking forward to most? Thought I'm moving up from 384 a as well as playing its uh, possibly some of your friends within the CPC you know, that's what it's all about. Man playing against you grew up with, you know, I talked about the competition. I don't want it to be easy for me, especially with the young guys. Someone up. I want to see what they're able to do. I want to be able to I want to be that leader to them because I remember when I was a freshman I would look up for the seniors. They would always give me tips and what to do. Now I'm that guy. I can help them out embassy we do at our 77 C. All of them showing out, not scared. I'm saying it's actually a lesson. See uh so I could park has South Iran went to Salem Prep and T. W. Andrews on its non conference schedule. Just had those matchups come about and just talk about the value in those games with a very difficult CPC slate to follow. Now we're excited I think are non conferences build us. Uh, definitely the ability to be able to go into our conference schedule with some momentum. Um You know, all those teams are good football team with very good football players. Um and so that gives us the opportunity to be able to see a couple of really good football players in the midst of a conference that has a lot of good football players. So um you know, our mindset is to literally go one and uh and then take it as it comes. So after that we want to know that we've got by way coming up shortly, we were fortunate to have that tv game. So these guys show their city their hard work and things that nature. Uh then we get to start our conference out with in high school. So Jackson, do you have any personal goals for your senior season that will begin in one month and one day from now? Yeah. You know, I appreciate that everybody wants to do with my main goal is to make the playoffs this year. I'm trying to go out the right what I'm saying. So the final question is up for you coach. I just wonder why one or two factors that would allow a Parkland to be successful this fall one just continue to build on what we've been doing, being a team, being together as a family. Um And the next one is, is just being able to get all our kids out like we've been doing, we've seen a huge increase in our numbers as far as participation, uh just being able to get more of the kids that are in our building um that are in our area zone to us to be able to come out and be a part of our mustang family.
