N.J. weather: Up to 5 inches of rain, damaging winds later after hot, humid start to Saturday - NJ.com

sumurbelakang.blogspot.com

A hot, humid start to the day in New Jersey is expected to usher in severe thunderstorms Saturday afternoon and evening that drop as much as five inches of rain on the state with damaging winds and potential flooding.

Most of the state is under a heat advisory or a flash flood watch (and many areas have both) on what could be a wild weather day in the Garden State.

Temperatures will soar into the low 90s with a heat index (how hot it feels) of about 100 by mid-afternoon when the chance of severe storms begins, the National Weather Service said Saturday.

Sunny skies are likely to give way to heavy downpours anytime after 2 p.m. though the slow-moving front is expected to push into New Jersey later in the afternoon.

Potential severe weather is expected in two rounds — the first this afternoon that will push offshore sometime between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m — and a later, secondary round of storms that might pack strong winds and more heavy rain.

The worst of the weather will be gone by about midnight though showers and thunderstorms could continue through the muggy overnight hours, forecasters say. Lows will be fall only into the 70s.

Forecasters haven’t yet determined where the strongest storms will align, but those spots could see 2 inches of more of rain per hour, the weather service said in its morning forecast discussion.

In addition, there is a “non-zero” chance of tornadoes forming later Saturday. Winds are the greater concern for forecasters, though.

Sunday should be cooler and drier with partly sunny skies and highs in the mid 80s. There’s still a threat of showers and thunderstorms, though they’re far less likely.

The flash flood watch runs from 2 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday in Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Salem, Somerset, Sussex and Warren counties.

In the northeast counties of Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union, a flash flood watch will be in effect from 2 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m Sunday. The heat advisory in those counties will be in effect until 8 p.m. Saturday as it will feel like it’s in the upper 90s.

There is also a heat advisory for Burlington, Camden, Gloucester; Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth Morris, Ocean, Salem and Somerset until 8 p.m. A heat index as high as 103 is in the forecast.
