The third-seed in this year's Stanley Cup Playoffs following a 36-17-3 regular season mark, Cooper and the Lightning won the decisive Game 5 over the Montreal Canadiens, 1-0, in front of a packed crowd at Tampa Bay's Amalie Arena to take the series, 4-1, and win the third Stanley Cup in franchise history and the second in as many years.
The 2020-21 season marked the eighth season behind the bench as head coach for Cooper following his hire in 2013. Cooper has won 384 games during his time with the Lightning, including 70 post-season games, and has taken the franchise to the playoffs seven times, with three trips to the Stanley Cup Final and back-to-back Stanley Cup victories.
The Lightning named Cooper the eighth head coach in franchise history in 2013 following successful head coaching stints in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Norfolk Admirals, where he won the Calder Cup in 2011-12, and the Syracuse Crunch. Cooper also coached the North American Hockey League (NAHL)'s St. Louis Bandits and the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League (USHL) to league titles.
From 1986-89, Cooper totaled 99 points on 74 goals and 25 assists for Hofstra after arriving in Hempstead from Prince George, British Columbia, Canada. He was a member of East Coast Conference championship teams in 1988 and 1989 and graduated fifth all-time in goals scored and ninth all-time in points scored at Hofstra. Cooper graduated in 1989 with a degree in business administration.
