Jaguars 2021 Training Camp Outlook: Running back got an injection of talent - Big Cat Country

The 2021 Jacksonville Jaguars will look quite a bit different than their 2020 counterpart, in large part because the entire coaching staff has been upended and replaced and the team picked a quarterback with the first overall pick. The team is also going through with a change in defensive schemes, so even that will look quite different.

Training camp starts just around the corner, so we can start looking through the positions to get an idea of where we are and what we can look to.

Next up, the running back position.

Starter(s)

Like the quarterback, I put this one as a potential plural starter. James Robinson had a fantastic rookie season and should be expected to be the bell cow for the 2021 season entering training camp, but first round pick Travis Etienne will likely also have a very large role in the offense. What got a lot of weird press was Etienne running drills with wide receivers during OTAs and rookie camp, but if the plan is to utilize both Robinson and Etienne as much as possible, it makes sense so they can both be on the field at the same time. As mentioned, I still expect Robinson to get the lion’s share of the carries, but Etienne is going to be enough of a factor in the offense where they may as well be known as co-starters.

Depth

After the top two of James Robinson and Travis Etienne, the Jaguars depth chart is a bit of a mixed back. Back is veteran running back Carlos Hyde, who seems like an insurance policy for injury more than anything else. Hyde’s first stint with the Jaguars wasn’t the best, but he returned to form with the Houston Texans. Back are also Devine Ozigbo, who has a lot of potential as a do-everything type of player and last season’s emergency add in Dare Ogunbowale is still listed on the roster along with Nathan Cottrell. I believe that Hyde is a lock for the roster, however after that it seems to be who can offer the most versatility and add on special teams.
