CREST services starting back up | News, Sports, Jobs - Fairmont Sentinel

FAIRMONT — CREST services are up and running again after a long break during the Covid-19 pandemic. Joyce Peterson, CREST’s caregiver support services director, said they started in the month of June.

The volunteer organization offers several different support groups, including general caregiver support, Alzheimer’s/Dementia, Parkinson’s and low vision.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the support group meetings, like much else, stopped taking place. While Peterson was available for one-on-one phone calls for caregivers throughout the pandemic, she explained why the return of in-person meetings is so important.

“It’s so much more stimulating. When you’re talking on the phone, you’re talking to one person. But in a support group, it’s so important to be there because they have suggestions and ways of helping each other. The groups are very cohesive and empathetic,” Peterson explained.

on said they’re open to new people joining. She’s also open to continuing one-on-one sessions if people don’t feel comfortable meeting in a group yet.

The popular Lunch and Learn sessions have also returned. Peterson said they had many people waiting for them to come back.

They consist of a program, often an educational speaker, that starts at 11. Following that a lunch is provided and then people often stick around for socializing.

“Socialization is very important,” Peterson stressed.

Peterson said they had nearly a dozen people at both sessions in June. They take place the first Wednesday of each month in Sherburn and the third Wednesday of each month in Trimont.

She said they’ve tried to hold them in Fairmont in the past but didn’t get a good turn out.

“We’ve had some good speakers here in the past, and we’re hoping to get back to doing that in the fall,” Peterson said.

Spice of Life has also returned. It’s a fairly new program in the CREST lineup.

“It’s an event that we have once a month. It’s for people with dementia and their caregivers, whether it be a wife, husband, son, daughter or a home health person. Whoever is providing services for them,” Peterson said.

She said they gather at the CREST office and do fun activities. In the past they’ve played corn hole and decorated cupcakes.

“We had one session before Covid shut us down last year,” Peterson explained.

Spice of Life will take place on the third Thursday of each month at the CREST office.

While a lot of programs have returned, CREST is also developing some new ones. Peterson said they’re working on a respite program that should likely start in September.

CREST is also in need of some volunteers to do some light housekeeping.
