Last April was a much different landscape than the one we experienced this year. During a time of great uncertainty the Idaho Falls Magazine team elected to postpone our annual Dining Awards until 2021. Although upsetting, this wasn’t anything in comparison to the challenges restaurant owners faced during that difficult time period, including whether or not to keep their doors open during a nationwide shutdown or change their entire business to continue serving the public.

It was remarkable to watch restaurants bounce back into business this year with the help of locals. Our area is frequently lauded as the gateway to Yellowstone, but we have proven to be so much more than that over the past year. When the pools of tourists dried up and we were left on our own, we found ways to continue to survive and make life happen—a feat worth applauding, especially for those in the food, hospitality and entertainment industries.

As we bounce back to normal, it’s important we continue to show the support we showered on restaurants and other local establishments during more difficult times. Though we might no longer be under shutdown and are finally able to get the much-anticipated COVID-19 vaccine to protect ourselves, businesses are still struggling to regain their footing. 

Here are some ways we can help support local businesses:

Shop small. Replace one of your routine stops at commercial establishments with a locally-owned eatery or shop. The money you spend there will have a larger impact, going straight to people who live in your community.

Give the gift of shopping local. Gift-giving can be a nightmare, especially if you don’t know what a person likes. Giving a gift card from a local business is a win-win, allowing the person on the receiving end of your generosity to choose what they want and give directly to small businesses.

Spread the word. Small acts like leaving a review on Facebook can make a major difference. Share your experiences shopping locally with others.

But more importantly, you will find the winners of this year’s dining awards, businesses you hand-picked and which we hope will continue to see success for years to come.
