Wolves Fight Back, But Simon Fraser Holds On In Three - WOU Athletics

MONMOUTH, Ore. – After the first set, the Western Oregon University volleyball team was within a few points of winning both the second and third sets. Simon Fraser fought off the Wolves in a couple of close late sets to take the 3-0 victory (25-8, 25-23, 25-23) in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action inside NPE Gym on Saturday night.

Simon Fraser (10-4, 4-3 GNAC) came out on fire and moved ahead 6-1 in the opening set. An Emily Olson kill had WOU (2-12, 0-7 GNAC) back to within six, but another lengthy run by Simon Fraser, this one a 7-0 variety, moved the lead to 16-3. Bailee Hartsook, Lauren Smith, Isabel Hurliman and Delaney Smith all contributed points down the stretch, but it wasn't enough to slow down SFU. Simon Fraser finished the set on a 9-5 run to take the first set at 25-8.

Once the match flipped to set two, the Wolves stayed right with SFU. Early on in the second set, Hurliman and Hartsook tallied kills for the 3-1 lead. WOU kept a two-point lead at 9-7 on a double-block from Hurliman and Delaney Smith and then a kill by Hurliman. Simon Fraser came back and moved ahead at 14-12. After three straight errors by SFU moved WOU back in front, they continued what would turn out to be a 7-0 run. Hartsook, Lauren Smith and a double-block by Hartsook and Bella MacLellan all added to the run that had WOU looking at a 19-14 lead. Still ahead at 20-15, SFU came right back with a 4-0 burst to pull to within one at 20-19. With the set tied at 21, WOU moved back in front on a kill by Hurliman. SFU reeled off the next two points and after a kill by Hurliman knotted the set at 23, Simon Fraser picked up a kill and then an attack error to win the set at 25-23, finishing the set on a 4-1 run.

The third set was tight throughout. Tied at 10, WOU went on a 4-1 run to create some separation with Hartsook tallying two kills and a pair of attack errors by SFU had WOU with a 14-11 lead. The lead stretched to four following a kill by Hartsook and service ace by Kiana Pel at 16-12. Simon Fraser, just like the second set, got things rolling late with a 4-1 run to pull to within a point at 17-16. WOU kept the pressure on as a few errors by SFU and then a kill by MacLellan had WOU with a 21-19 lead. SFU came back with two straight points to tie the set at 21. After a Hartsook kill had the Wolves in front at 22-21, SFU collected two straight kills and a service ace to move to match point at 24-22. Hartsook kept the match alive with a kill, before SFU was able to end the set at 25-23 on a kill by Kalyn Hartmann to take the match at 3-0.

Simon Fraser tallied 48 kills to 10 errors in 117 chances to hit .325. WOU collected 33 kills to 16 errors in 109 chances to hit .156. SFU held the edge in service aces (6-3), blocks (7-4), assists (47-31) and digs (55-50).

Hartsook led the offense with 10 kills and added eight digs. Hurliman also had eight digs to go along with eight kills. Lauren Smith tallied seven kills. Aubrey Stanton had 16 assists, while Laney O'Neil added 13. Pel led the back row with nine digs, while Sophie Matlock tied with Hartsook and Hurliman with eight and O'Neil had seven. Hurliman, Delaney Smith and MacLellan all had two blocks.

Brooke Dexter had a big night for Simon Fraser with 18 kills and made it a double-double with 11 digs. Jocelyn Sherman, Hanna Kolof and Hartmann all added eight kills. Julia Tays dished out 38 assists. On defense, Biana Te had 17 digs and Hartmann sent back four blocks.

WOU will hit the road this coming week to start a stretch of three straight away from Monmouth. They will open the trip on Thursday at Central Washington starting at 7 p.m. They will close the week on Saturday at Northwest Nazarene with an afternoon game at 12 p.m. (Pacific). The final game of the three-game swing will be at Saint Martin's on Saturday, Oct. 23 starting at 5:15 p.m.
