VESTAL, N.Y. — The Hartford volleyball team stormed back from a 1-0 deficit to take down Binghamton, 3-1, in America East action Sunday at the Binghamton Events Center. Freshman Camryn Luginbuhl (19 kills) and junior Maddie Lindsay (10) finished with double-digit kills for the Hawks, who earned their first win in conference play.
Hartford (3-14) improves to 1-3 in the America East, while Binghamton (6-10) falls to 2-2 in league action.
SET ONE: BINGHAMTON 26, HARTFORD 24
The Hawks mounted a huge rally in the opening set and fought the Bearcats down to the wire before coming up short. Falling behind early by a 10-4 count, Hartford dug itself into a 15-7 hole before it began to chip away at its deficit. A 7-2 spurt fueled by four kills — including two from sophomore Morgan Galligan — gave the Hawks life and closed the gap down to three at 17-14.
Down the stretch, back-to-back kills from Lindsay would fuel a 4-0 run that brought Hartford within one, 22-21, before Luginbuhl tied things up at 24-all on her sixth kill of the afternoon. The Hawks would not claim the lead, though, as the Bearcats answered with two straight kills to close out the set on top.
SET TWO: HARTFORD 25, BINGHAMTON 20
The Hawks came out of the gates strong in set two, taking their first lead of the day at 9-2 behind the strength of a service ace from junior Robin Helms and kills from Helms, Luginbuhl and Lindsay. Hartford continued to add on to its lead, going ahead by as many as nine (15-6). The Bearcats made things interesting down the stretch and pulled within two (21-19), but the Hawks fought off the comeback bid and closed out the set with a 4-1 run to seal the win.
SET THREE: HARTFORD 25, BINGHAMTON 21
Hartford and Binghamton battled in the third set, as the two sides played to 11 ties to the tune of a 19-19 deadlock. Senior Valerie Diede came up huge for Hartford in clutch time, though, delivering three straight service aces to fuel a 4-0 spurt that made it a 23-19 Hawks' advantage. Luginbuhl delivered the final two blows for Hartford, contributing a pair of kills down the stretch to seal the victory.
SET FOUR: HARTFORD 25, BINGHAMTON 16
The Hawks shook off a slow start and used an 8-2 run featuring five attack errors from the Bearcats to take an 18-13 lead. The Hawks continued to rally, with kills from Luginbuhl and Galligan helping build a commanding 21-14 advantage. Hartford closed out the set strong, scoring four of the final six points to take the set, and the match.
