Cross Country Back in Action at FSU Pre-Nationals Meet - FGCU Athletics

FORT MYERS, Fla. – After nearly a month off from competition, the FGCU men's and women's cross country teams return to action on Friday morning at the FSU Pre-Nationals Meet at the Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee.
 
The Pre-Nationals meet will include four races with the Garnet fields featuring many of the top Division I teams in the country.  The races will feature 31 teams either ranked or receiving votes in the latest USTFCCCA poll. Both FGCU squads will compete in the Open 8K for the men and the Open 6K for the women.
 
The Men's 8k Garnet race will begin at 8:00 a.m., followed by the Women's 6k Garnet race at 8:35 a.m. The Open races start with the men's 8k at 9:10 a.m. and the women's 6k at 9:45 a.m.
Admission is $5 and tickets can be purchased at Seminoles.com. There will be live timing available at pttiming.com.
 
Though they have raced in almost a month, the Eagles are familiar with the Apalachee course as FGCU's last race was there for the highly competitive FSU Open. The men placed 14^th of 26 teams, while the women placed 24^th of 29.
 
Osman Humeida (South Riding, Va./Freedom HS/Virginia Tech) placed 44^th and Karley Piers (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth HS) finished 76^th overall to lead the Green and Blue, respectively.
 
Humeida earlier won the FAU Invitational becoming the first Eagle to win the event since Luka Ndungu in 2016. Piers' freshman season was also highlighted by the FAU Invitational where she placed fourth and ran the second-fastest time in program history for a 5K race.
 
Following the FSU Pre-Nationals, the Eagles will head to the ASUN Championship in Orlando, Fla., at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex on Saturday, October 30.

FGCU is led by Cassandra Goodson, whose 13 seasons at the helm have taken the Eagles from their humble beginnings to a competitive D-I program, highlighted by eight trips to the NCAA South Regional Championship. Every mark in the FGCU all-time record book has been etched during the Goodson era, as she has coached 22 ASUN All-Conference selections, the 2013 Female Conference Runner of the Year and three members of the NCAA South All-Region Team.

ABOUT FGCU 
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 85 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 14+ seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just nine seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 42 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Eight FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport - including women's basketball (No. 21, 2020-21), beach volleyball (No. 20, 2021) and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.50 GPA in the classroom in the fall 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 24 consecutive semesters. The 2019 Fall, 2020 Spring, 2020 Fall, and 2021 Spring semesters each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA in each. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 - being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
