Back-to-Back Shutouts Earn Horacek & Bonner Earn Big South Awards

Women's Soccer /

FARMVILLE, Va. – After a week in which they played key roles in helping first-place Longwood women's soccer extend its winning streak to five games, Longwood senior goalkeeper Jordan Horacek was named Big South Defensive Player of the Week and freshman defender Brooke Bonner was named Freshman of the Week, the Big South office announced Monday.

Horacek and Bonner contributed to back-to-back Big South shutouts, as the Lancers blanked both reigning Big South champion Campbell and Charleston Southern 1-0 at home this past Wednesday and Saturday. Those wins were the latest in a dominant stretch in which the Lancers (6-5-4, 5-0-2 Big South) have gone unbeaten in their past seven games, defeated five consecutive league foes in one-goal wins, and climbed to the top of the Big South standings with just three games remaining.

Horacek was the last line of defense in Longwood's Big South-leading fifth and sixth shutouts of the season, amassing 11 saves in those 1-0 victories. The 5-10 senior and first-year starter made six of those against the offensive juggernaut Fighting Camels and five more against Charleston Southern as Longwood dealt Campbell its first Big South shutout of the season and snapped the Camels' 10-game unbeaten streak.

Horacek has now earned a Big South-leading six shutouts on the year, leads the conference with a 0.81 goals against average and ranks second with a .821 save percentage. She has allowed just five goals in seven Big South games and boasts a 6-2-4 record on the season.

Meanwhile, Bonner continued to anchor the left side of Longwood's backfield, playing every minute of last week's shutouts. Her physical play limited both foes' scoring opportunities, with the majority of their combined 11 shots on goal coming from outside the penalty box.

Bonner was especially impactful against Big South offensive juggernaut Campbell, which entered Wednesday's game second in the Big South with more than 2.00 goals per game but instead suffered their first Big South shutout of the season.

The Big South Player of the Week honors give Longwood league awards for a second straight week following senior forward Danielle Toone's Offensive Player of the Week citation this past week. The defensive honor is a first for Horacek, as is the freshman honor for Bonner.

Longwood, which boasts a two-point lead for first place in the conference ahead of Campbell, will close out the regular season in the next two weeks with back-to-back home games against USC Upstate (Oct. 16) and High Point (Oct. 20), and the finale at UNC Asheville on Oct. 23.
