Back 4 Blood, or Left 4 Dead 3 if you just want to call it that, has had its first early test where players are able to get their hands on the game. It’s fun! It also has one of the weirdest, most unfortunate issues I’ve heard about a video game in a long while.
The zombies uh, well the zombies are racist.
No really, there are zombies running around…occasionally screaming the n-word.
When I first heard that this was happening, I figured this had to be one of those psychological-like “you will hear this word in this sound if we tell you the word ahead of time” things but no, this is very much the n-word. You can hear it distinctly in two captured clips here, if you want to see the unfortunate mistake in action.
And it is that, a mistake. No, the mistake is not “they accidentally put a recording of a slur as a zombie voiceline,” but rather here’s the official explanation for how this happened:
“Our team has been made aware of offensive language that can be heard when playing the game. This was not recorded or ever intended to be part of our gameplay. The audio is a result of two different Ridden growls that are playing simultaneously and when heard together sound like that word. We are working diligently to fix this issue, which should be completed either in time for the Beta, or when the game launches.”
So, just really, really bad audio luck there. I can imagine how you might want to combine a bunch or recorded zombie screams to create new scream variants, but these ones paired together resulted in this…unfortunate incident.
Back 4 Blood is meant to be a big new launch for Turtle Rock, a return to form after the failure of Evolve and a whole lot of drama with the THQ shutdown which left everyone in limbo. Now, they’re back partnered with WB for Back 4 Blood, and all indications are that it should be a return to form for them, heading back to what everyone knows them best for, multiplayer zombie killing.
Back 4 Blood’s release date is October 12, and you can bet it is not going to launch with this audio. But if you’ve heard this in the game, A) you’re not crazy, you really did hear it, and B) this is why.
