MORE: Murphy to tour flood-damaged N.J. neighborhoods after Tropical Storm Henri

Heavy rain from Tropical Storm Henri that has triggered flooding across northern and central New Jersey will finally wind down later Monday morning, forecasters say.

Flood warnings remain in effect in portions of Hunterdon, Somerset, Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex Moris and Warren counties — most until noon, the National Weather Service says.

Other parts of those counties as well as Monmouth are under a flood watch that wraps up at noon.

While steady rain is expected to end this morning, there will be a chance of scattered thunderstorms this afternoon as temperatures climb into the mid-80s.

“Don’t expect a widespread severe threat,” the weather service said in its Monday morning forecast discussion.

Monday night into Tuesday morning will be muggy with lows in the upper 60s.

Hot, sunny conditions return Tuesday and Wednesday with temps climbing to about 90.

Paterson, Passaic, Wayne, Bloomfield, Hackensack, Bergenfield, Paramus, West Milford, Ridgewood, Lyndhurst and Rutherford were expected to get up to another inch of rain before the warning in those areas end at 7:30 a.m. Those North Jersey locations had widespread totals of more than 3 inches as of early Monday.

Ringwood had recorded nearly 8 inches of storm-related rain by 3:45 a.m. while Harrison had almost 7 inches before 1 a.m., the weather service said.

Major flooding is taking place at the Millstone River at Griggstown in Somerset County, where the water level was more than 17 feet at 6 a.m. Flood stage is 10 feet. Three spots had moderate flooding — the Millstone River in Millstone and Blackwell Mills as well as the Saddle River in Lodi.

Another 15 locations along rivers in north and Central Jersey were experiencing minor flooding early Monday.

Those rivers should start to recede as rain tapers off later this morning.
