MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio

Grand theft: Bagley Road

An officer went to the Red Roof Inn at 5 p.m. July 14 regarding a car that had been stolen from the parking lot.

The victim said he had been on the east side of Cleveland when he saw a woman waiting for the bus. He asked if she needed a ride and she said yes. He did not know her, but drove her to two Bureau of Motor Vehicles locations, both of which were closed.

He then drove to Red Roof Inn to rent a room for the two of them. He went inside to check in, leaving his car running.

That is when the passenger became the driver. She then drove away.

The man told the officer that she did not have permission to drive the car. He said the car has Michael Jordan and veteran stickers on the rear windshield. The car was entered as stolen.

He said the woman was in her early 20s, about 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighed about 280 pounds and had black hair.

Theft: Sheldon Road

Police went to Dan’s Dry Dock at 7:41 a.m. July 16 regarding a theft. They met the victim, who said his trailer was missing from the yard. He said he had parked his pickup truck there, with the trailer attached to it, July 13.

Police contacted a witness, who said he had seen the trailer at 7:30 p.m. July 14, but did not see it attached to the pickup truck at 4:30 p.m. July 15.

The trailer had been hitched to the victim’s work truck, but it was not locked. He said the control panel box, however, was locked.

He said the trailer did not have a plate, but the license plate holder was bent, as was the hitch’s front post. The trailer, valued at $8,328, was note insured.

The owner contacted the business, which advised him that a motion sensor and camera are installed at the front gate. Police listed the trailer as stolen.

Criminal damage: Fowles Road

An officer at 11:25 a.m. July 18 went to a home where a car had a broken rear windshield. The victim said he had last seen his car at 10:15 p.m. July 17. It was not damaged then.

He said he did not hear anything during the night. He found the damage that morning. He did not find any rocks or BBs in the area. He said he opened the hatch and some of the glass fell to the ground.

The victim and an officer watched video from a home security camera. It showed that at about 10:30 p.m., someone on a bike rode to the driveway from Big Creek Parkway, did a U-turn and continued toward Big Creek Parkway. The bike had lights on the tires. The person on the bike did not appear to stop in front of the driveway.

Weaving: Eastland Road

An officer randomly selected a passing car at 7:53 p.m. July 18 to run a license registration check. He found that the plate had expired.

He then saw the motorist weaving across lanes and almost into oncoming traffic. Although he initiated emergency lights and the cruiser’s siren, the car kept rolling at about 35 mph without stopping. He continued to follow the car and requested help.

The car was in the turning lane trying to make a left-hand turn. The officer left his cruiser and approached the car, asking the driver to put the car in park and turn off the ignition. The suspect complied and exited the car when asked. He said he hadn’t noticed the cruiser behind him.

He said he was heading to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. The officer, however, noted his red and glassy eyes and strong alcohol breath. The man admitted to consuming a “couple glasses of bourbon maybe an hour ago.”

He performed field sobriety tests and measured a .232 blood-alcohol content level. He was arrested. An almost empty bourbon bottle was found in his car inside a grocery bag.

While in the booking room, the suspect said, “I just love to f****** drink.” He was also cited for drunken driving, expired plates and other charges.

Grand theft: Fry Road

An officer went to a home at 9 p.m. July 18 about a bicycle that had been stolen from a back yard. The resident said an unknown car was seen parked in front of her house at 8:40 p.m. July 17, according to the home’s doorbell camera.

The next day, she went outside and discovered that her daughter’s bicycle had been stolen from the yard. The bike was valued at $250.

She could not distinguish the make or model of the car that was seen on the doorbell video.

Grand theft: Sheldon Road

A man went to Dan’s Dry Dock July 20, where his personal watercraft was stored. He noticed that it was missing from its parking space.

Office personnel at the storage facility said they last had last seen it about a week ago. The item was on a trailer, which was also stolen.

It was later learned through security video that the stolen items may have been placed on a flatbed trailer that was also stolen. The video shows that the theft occurred at 1:34 a.m. July 15. Police are investigating.

Theft: Bagley Road

An officer went to Aldi’s July 21 regarding a shoplifter who was still inside the store. He learned that the suspect was at the front register checking out some merchandise. He then found the suspect, allowed him to check out and told him the reason police were there. The suspect was then detained.

The officer found a digital food assistance card on the suspect. It belonged to a woman the man said was his wife. He said she had given him permission to use it. He was unable to prove she was his wife. The officer confiscated the card until its owner could be identified.

The store manager said he saw the suspect enter the store with an empty shopping cart at 11:34 a.m. and leave shortly after with a cart containing 52 packages of beef jerky and 32 summer sausages without paying for them. The items, which were not recovered, totaled $276.

The suspect returned to the store and police were called. The suspect also had been seen on surveillance video stealing detergent July 18. The total was $212, but it was never reported to police.

The officer found that the suspect had an active warrant in two cities. He was cited for theft and released at the scene, since the other jurisdictions did not want to pick him up.

The woman who owns the assistance card picked it up at the police station.

Warrant: Pearl Road

An officer on patrol July 21 learned via an automatic plate reader that the owner of a car had an active warrant. He saw the car and the motorist, who matched the description of the owner. The driver stopped after seeing the cruiser’s emergency lights. The suspect was arrested and was transported to the Cuyahoga County Jail.
