MARSHALL — It’s been a year, but free family events are coming back to Marshall this weekend. Sounds of Summer organizers are gearing up for a variety of community activities with both plenty of returning favorites and some new events.

“We’re looking forward to getting everyone back together,” said Sounds of Summer committee member Brock Klaith. “We’re excited.”

This year, the Sounds of Summer schedule includes traditional events like the grand parade on Saturday after noon, followed by an evening including food, inflatables for the kids, and a free outdoor concert. The music starts at 6:30 p.m. There is a slight change in venue this year, Klaith said. Instead of heading to the parking lots across from the Schwan’s offices on West College Drive, community members should go to the Whitney parking lot downtown.

There are a variety of community events partnering with Sounds of Summer this year as well. Marshall Public Schools will be holding tours of the new Southview Elementary School this afternoon, and on Saturday Hope Harbor will be holding a family fun event starting at 10 a.m. at the Escape Spa parking lot on South Second Street. The event will feature both carnival-style games and a bounce house.

The Marshall Fire Department will also be downtown serving up hamburgers Saturday after the parade, Klaith said. Stopping by for a meal is a great way to show support for local firefighters, he said.

A harvest anniversary in Porter

This weekend, Porter area residents will also be celebrating their community — it’s the city of Porter’s 140th anniversary, which will be one of the themes of this weekend’s Harvest Festival. Celebrations kick off this evening with events like a North Versus South softball game, pitting players from north of Highway 68 in Porter against a team from south of the highway. The community will also be holding a development supper and fundraiser from 5-7 p.m. at the Porter Cafe.

A variety of events, including a vendor and craft fair, a tractor and equipment show, kickball tournament and outdoor dance will be held Saturday. The festivities will continue Sunday with a grilling competition to benefit the Porter Senior Dining Fund, a two-cylinder tractor drive, and the Porter Trail Dusters saddle club’s fun horse show and competitions.

Murray County Fair in Slayton

The Murray County Fair also continues this weekend, with attractions like food and exhibits, as well as inflatables for the kids and grandstand entertainment. Tonight, stock car races will start at the grandstand at 7:30 p.m., and Enduro car racing will start Saturday night. Saturday’s events also include the Prairie Days parade in downtown Slayton, an antique fire truck show, and a free evening concert. IV Play will perform starting at 9 p.m., and a fireworks display is planned at dusk.
