ALBANY, N.Y. — New York state Assembly members may enter the final stages of their impeachment inquiry into Gov. Andrew Cuomo before September and plan to release their findings publicly at that time, a key lawmaker said on Monday.
The State Assembly Judiciary Committee is meeting for the first time since the release of Attorney General Tish James' report corroborating accusations of sexual misconduct made against the three-term governor. Lawmakers on the committee were quickly ushered into a closed session on Monday morning where they planned to discuss their work and determine the next steps they’ll take in moving toward calling a vote to impeach Cuomo.
"Our investigation remains confidential, as it should be, and at the appropriate time — and as early as later this month — we will discuss the evidence publicly in an open and transparent manner once the investigation is either completed or close to completion," Assemblymember Charles Lavine (D-Nassau), the chair of the commitee, said in opening remarks.
The committee members, who plan to hear from their outside counsel, are expected to work out the timing of their investigation, when public hearings may be held and what charges might be brought against the embattled governor. Their meeting was expected to last several hours.
Cuomo is facing widespread calls to resign, but has so far refused, even as his most senior aide did so on Sunday. The Judiciary Committee has for months been conducting its own probe into the sexual misconduct allegations and is also looking at issues including Cuomo's alleged use of public resources to help author a book and the governor's handling of Covid-19 outbreaks tied to nursing homes.
“The findings and content of the report are deeply disturbing,” Lavine said. “We will review that report in detail, including the underlying evidence and consider it, together, this committee’s own independent investigation.”
