The Nevada Storm women's football team is aiming for Women's Football Alliance history in the coming weeks.
The Storm, which is based in Northern Nevada, won the Division III championship in 2019 and is now in the Division II playoffs. With the 2020 season being canceled, the Storm is looking to become the first team in WFA history to win back-to-back titles while jumping a division in between championships.
The Storm (6-0) host the Mike High Blaze (6-0) in a first-round playoff matchup Saturday at North Valleys High at 6 p.m. Tickets are $12. The team is three wins away from a WFA title.
Jesse Felker, the team's star running back and linebacker, has been with the Nevada Storm for six seasons. She said being able to play tackle football as a woman has been amazing.
"I actually wanted to play football as a kid," Felker said. "I used to play outside with all the boys at recess, and honestly I was better than them. I was really good at tackling and really aggressive and physical and guys are not used to that. As a kid, nobody cares if you're a girl or a guy. When I got to high school, it was, like, 'You can't play. You're a girl.' When I found out about the team, I was, like, 'Am I too old for this? Why all of a sudden do I want to go play football.' It's definitely been one of the best decisions of my life. I love it. I love playing football. I feel like if I grew up playing it and there was a college program for women and that was a thing, that would have been the sport I played in college."
Felker said the best thing about football is the teamwork aspect. Its nearly impossible for one player to win a game by his or herself. Felker said that bond is what makes her return back to football year in and year out. She joined the Storm when the team went winless. This year, Nevada is undefeated entering the playoffs. The Storm won its last game, 74-0, and has out-scored its opponents, 230-22, in 2021.
"It really is a team sport," Felker said. "It's one of the only sports you can't really be an individual and just take over a game. Maybe in Pop Warner, but no matter how good I am or other players are, you really need your teammates. It's a really cool feeling. The feeling of having lost for so long and finally starting to win and come together, these girls out here and coaches are like family. That's a really cool feeling. Not to say I never got that from playing other sports, but football is different. It takes a lot to play it. It's not like other sports. It's very taxing on your nervous system. It's just a cool feeling when you've bled, done all this crazy stuff and we've finally won and all that losing and all the broken bones is worth it. It's weird. It's like a battlefield."
If the Storm beats the Blaze on Saturday, it would advance to the Division II's Final Four. The championship game will be played July 23 at the Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.
"That's all we've been thinking about since we won the last one," Felker said. "We're kind of weird like that, especially me. Right after the game, it was, like, 'Man, let's do that again.' Back-to-back would be awesome. The Nevada Storm, the history of it in 11-man football, we've never gone undefeated, so we'd be making history. It'd suck not to get there. I want to get there."
