The Orlando Magic will have two top-10 picks in this year’s NBA Draft.
During Tuesday night’s NBA Draft lottery, Orlando received the fifth and eighth overall picks. The Magic have never had a No. 8 pick before, but there have been some notables at No. 5.
Here’s a look at the previous players selected fifth overall by Orlando:
Mike Miller (2000)
College: Florida
Years with Magic: 2000-03
Magic Stats: 14.1 points per game, 4.6 rebounds per game, 2.5 assists per game, 43% field goals, 38% 3-pointers
Overview: The 2000-01 NBA Rookie of the Year, Mike Miller spent nearly three seasons with the Orlando Magic and averaged better than 15 points over each of his final two. A compliment to young superstar Tracy McGrady, Miller was traded midway through the 2002-03 season to the Memphis Grizzlies for Drew Gooden and Gordan Giricek. At the time of the trade, Orlando was just 26-29, but finished 16-11 to close the season. Miller would go on to have a journeyman career, playing for seven different teams. Miller won a pair of NBA titles with the Miami Heat.
Mario Hezonja (2015)
College: N/A (Croatia)
Years with Magic: 2015-18
Magic Stats: 6.9 points per game, 2.8 rebounds per game, 1.3 assists per game, 42% field goals, 33% 3-pointers
Overview: It’s hard to believe, but Mario Hezonja actually spent more time with the Orlando Magic than Mike Miller. Over his three seasons, Hezonja played in all but 27 games for the Magic. The best season of his career was his final season in Orlando. During the 2017-18 campaign, he averaged 9.6 points and shot 44% from the field – both career-highs. After one-year stints with the New York Knicks and Portland Trail Blazers, Hezonja spent this season playing in Greece.
