School just let out, but local youth advocates are already gearing up to help youngsters be ready for heading back to classrooms this fall.
Organizers of the ninth-annual Back to School Fair — scheduled for 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28, at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club, at 400 W. Fir St. — are raising funds to purchase school supplies and backpacks that are distributed at the event for students and families in need.
Those interested in sponsorship or making a monetary donation can visit bgc-op.org and make a donation online ( note BTSF in the “Donation Notes” section).
Castell Insurance, an annual supporter of the event, is matching customer contributions up to $2,000.
Along with backpacks and other supplies, students can get information from various groups. Immunizations and COVID-19 vaccinations will be available as well.
This year’s event will once again be a drive-through venue. Grade-appropriate, pre-packaged school supply parcels will be distributed in a drive-through format according to a pre-set time for each school.
School families can drive through without having to leave their cars; masks are still encouraged.
The drive-through route begins at the high school stadium parking lot on West Fir Street, and volunteers will be on hand to direct traffic.
Helen Haller Elementary School families may drive through anytime between 10 a.m.-noon, while Greywolf Elementary School families may drive through anytime between noon-2 p.m. Middle school and high school families, as well as Olympic Peninsula Academy families and Dungeness Virtual School families, may drive through anytime between 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.
Individuals from several local organizations collaborate each year to plan, raise funds and host the Sequim event. Participating groups/businesses include the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula, Sequim Kiwanis, Sequim Community Helping Kids, Sequim School District, Walmart and United Way of Clallam County.
If your organization is interested in sponsoring this event, participating in a school supply drive, volunteering at the event, or would like more information, contact Nan Burris at secohelpingkids@gmail.com or Patsene Dashiell at patsene@olypen.com.
