The upcoming college basketball season has a new start date.
The 2020-21 season can begin on Nov. 25. It had previously been scheduled to start on Nov. 10, but has been pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The NCAA Division I Council met and voted on the date, among other topics. While the NCAA has not released all the details from the meeting, multiple reports, including one from NCAA reporter Andy Katz, cite the same information.
Teams must compete in a minimum of 13 regular-season games in order to be eligible for the NCAA Tournament. The maximum number of regular-season games was reduced from by four to 27. There will be no scrimmages or exhibitions this season. Teams are encouraged, but not mandated, to play at least four nonconference games.
These changes, as well as those noted below, apply to both men’s and women’s basketball.
The Council also voted that, beginning Sep. 21, teams can practice up to 12 hours per week, including eight on-court hours. More official practices -- up to 20 hours per week -- can start on Oct. 14, giving teams 42 days to conduct a maximum of 30 practices.
The recruiting dead period was extended until Jan. 1. Additionally, going forward, Division I athletes will not compete in practice or games on Election Day, the first Tuesday after Nov. 1. This year, that date is Nov. 3.
The news comes on the same day the Big Ten reinstated football for the fall. Those games will start on Oct. 23.
Many schools, including Michigan and Michigan State, have not yet released basketball schedules for the season, but had agreements in place that will have to be amended. Both programs were supposed to start on Nov. 10: Michigan was set to host Georgia State; the Spartans are part of the Champions Classic.
Jon Rothstein reported on Tuesday that the Champions Classic, among other early-season events, will be played in a bubble-like atmosphere in Orlando, Florida. It was originally scheduled for Chicago. Michigan had agreed to play in the Empire Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York on Nov. 19 and 20. Reports have suggested that event could be moved to Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut.
