‘Put the U Back in Syrac_se’ invites people back downtown to dine, shop, and have fun - syracuse.com

The Downtown Committee of Syracuse has launched a new campaign encouraging Central New Yorkers to come back to the area to safely and responsibly dine, shop, and have fun amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Put the U Back in Syracuse” started today and aims to give support to local businesses that are open and have followed Covid-19 safety protocols during New York’s phased reopening plan.

“Many of the small businesses that make up our community, including our shops, museums, restaurants; they’ve opened safely and responsibly. We want to get the word out that they are open again for our public to responsibly enjoy,” Downtown Committee Executive Director Merike Treier said.

The Downtown Committee cited that our countywide infection rate continues to stay below 1% and continues to be so for months, while businesses have reopened as part of why they have begun this initiative. Two thirds of the street level businesses in downtown Syracuse are back open.

They recognize everyone has different levels of comfort with returning to downtown and said there are many ways to support local businesses from takeout and curbside pickups to ones who have opened their doors to allow patrons inside.

The campaign concept was designed and donated by Mower and it has the support from Visit Syracuse, Mayor Ben Walsh, and Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon.

“This is what the rewards are for the work that the community has collectively put forward. That’s our ability to get pieces of our lives back to where we were before because we’ve been so successful beating back this pandemic to the point where essentially we’re living with this virus. We should celebrate that,” McMahon said.

Part of the “Put the U Back in Syracuse” campaign includes a socially-distanced, digital Syracuse Scavenger Hunt – which encourages the community to visit businesses, restaurants and explore iconic landmarks throughout Onondaga County.

Participants are eligible to win prizes from local businesses by completing the tasks listed on the Scavify app and earning points. The hunt will run from Sept. 2 -30 and full details can be found at ubackinsyracuse.com/Hunt/.

There is also a new colorful chalk mural, drawn by local artist Ally Walker with the campaign’s slogan on the side of 327 West Fayette St. facing Onondaga Creek. During the state shutdown, Walker “planted” 60 Easter eggs throughout Burnet Park for people to find.

Efforts to get patronage to downtown businesses have been ongoing over the summer, including the closing of Walton St. on weekends for extended outdoor dining as well as new parklets which will offer more dining areas in metered parking spots on streets which are not closed.

Outdoor dining has offered restaurants a way to help restaurants recover from the disruption caused by the pandemic and the phased-in reopening which currently only allows 50% capacity for indoor dining. Though indoor and outdoor dining are currently allowed in Central NY, many prefer sitting outside when they can.

Walsh said the city will work with businesses on ideas to keep things like weekends on Walton going. McMahon said we need to look at ideas from cities like Ottawa which he said embraces outdoor dining year-round.

“We need to be able to utilize outdoor dining and successfully do it throughout the winter,” McMahon said.

New York State has a whole continues to slowly reopen as the positive test rate continues to fall with 26 days of a positive test rate below 1 percent.
