Portland Public Schools will offer child care for up to 270 children starting in late September.
The district on Thursday announced that it has contracted with seven providers to offer the service at nine schools. Each building will accommodate two groups of 15 children.
The programs will run Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. for children between the ages of 5 and 12. It will cost about $1,000 per month per child without subsidies.
Half of those child care slots will be reserved for families who qualify for financial assistance. Households with gross monthly earnings of $4,012 per month or less may qualify to have all of their child care bill covered by the state Department of Human Services.
Officials plan to roll out child care services in more schools throughout the year.

The district does not yet have a working agreement with the union representing its teachers on what a safe return to school looks like. Even then, officials have said students won’t see the inside of a classroom until at least November.
Many of the state’s largest districts, including North Clackamas and Salem-Keizer, have announced similar plans to delay in-person learning for at least two months.
Several districts, including Portland, Eugene and Lincoln County, have also set up all-digital academies that will operate virtually for the whole school year. Even districts that are offering part- or full-time in person learning have plans to pivot to distance learning full-time should coronavirus cases suddenly spike.
That sort of uncertainty has put parents across the state in dire straits as they navigate a state child care system operating at less than half capacity.
In Portland Public Schools, the deadline to apply for child care financial assistance is Oct. 31. Families can apply by calling 211 or texting “children” — or, in Spanish, “niños” — to 898211. The subsidies are awarded for 12 months.
The district is contracting with Art 4 Life, Camp Fire Columbia, Champions, Kids' Community Learning Center, Neighborhood House and the YMCA to provide child care services.
