Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II has agreed to a “period of transition” for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle following a highly unusual meeting of senior members of the royal family, CNN reported Monday.

The couple delivered a bombshell announcement last week that they wished to step back from their roles in the family. The queen was joined at the summit by Prince Charles, Harry’s father; Prince William, Harry’s older brother; and Harry. Meghan was due to have dialed in from Canada. In a statement, the queen said that the family was “entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family.”

Part of the transition period agreement between the queen and the couple involved allowing Prince Harry and Meghan to split their time between the UK and Canada as more “complex matters” would have to be resolved in the next few days. Meghan is currently staying in the mansion on Vancouver Island where she, Harry and their baby son, Archie, spent their extended holiday break.
