NEW ORLEANS – Nuggets rookie Michael Porter Jr. said he didn’t think he was going to play Friday night against the Pelicans before going out and dropping a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double in the 113-106 gutsy win over the Pelicans.
He said he tweaked his back lifting Wednesday in Houston, which is why he missed the loss to the Rockets.
“It didn’t feel right,” Porter said Friday night, his first time speaking with the media since missing the game. “I felt a little limited, so I just wanted to give it a couple days’ rest, but it’s fine. It’s not a big deal.”
Porter’s effort on the glass helped the Nuggets to a 56-45 rebounding advantage, that included 24 offensive rebounds. The night marked Porter’s third double-double in his last four games.
Part of the reason he wanted to play was because he had 20 people in the crowd. The other aspect was that he recognized how compromised the Nuggets were due to injuries. Despite getting Gary Harris back, the Nuggets were still down Jamal Murray, Paul Millsap and Mason Plumlee.
“My family’s from here,” Porter said. “I wanted to play, plus, my team, we’re down, so I wanted to play. But I was a little bit banged up out there. It was good to keep going.”
Porter was questionable all of Friday, even after taking part in most of Denver’s morning shootaround. It wasn’t until he went through his typical pregame routine that he and Denver’s training staff made the final call.
“My back is fine,” Porter said. “It’s all good. I know people probably worry, but it’s all good.”
