Chaps Bounce Back Against Rattlers - LCU Athletics

LUBBOCK, Texas (January 23, 2020) – The Lubbock Christian men's basketball team got back in the win column on Thursday night, holding off a late comeback bid from St. Mary's for a 87-82 victory.

The Chaps held true to form in the win, moving to 5-0 when they shoot better than 50 percent (58.9) and 9-2 when they score at least 70 points.

Junior Parker Hicks led the Chap offensive outburst, surpassing the 20-point mark for just the second time in his career. He did most of his damage from behind the arc, hitting on five of his eight three-point attempts and shooting 7-13 overall while coming just one rebound short of a double-double. Lloyd Daniels finished close behind with 18 points on an efficient 7-11 shooting. Rashaan Proctor (14) and Cameron Copley (13) also finished in double-figures.

The best individual performance in the game, however, came from Rattler guard Kobe Magee, who scored a season-high 32 points in just 31 minutes on the floor. Magee hit on 10 of his 13 three-point attempts, which is the most by an LCU opponent in the last 10 years, which is as far back as LCU's game-by-game records are kept on file. It is also the most points scored by an opposing individual against the Chaps this year.

Despite the strong offensive performance, the Chaps did not lead wire-to-wire on Thursday night. St. Mary's got on the board first and led as late as the 14:56 mark in the first half, with a Mage three-pointer putting them up 13-11. Copley responded with a three-pointer of his own to give the Chaps the lead, followed by four straight points from Aamer Muhammad, and LCU never looked back, leading for the remainder of the game.

Lubbock Christian pushed the lead to double figures five minutes later, as Silas Crisler capped off an eight-point LCU run. St. Mary's would not go away that quietly though, cutting the deficit back to just four points with seven minutes before halftime. Only nine points were scored by the two teams combined in the final six minutes of the half, but the Chaps scored seven of them and led by 12 at the break.

St. Mary's cut the deficit down to nine points early in the second half, but Hicks killed the Rattler momentum with back-to-back straightaway three-pointers. The Chaps kept StMU at arm's length for most of the rest of the half, never letting the gap drop to single digits until the last minute of play. LCU's lead was at its widest point with just over five minutes left in the game, as freshman Ty Caswell scored all six of his points on back-to-back three pointers to put the Chaps up by 19.

The large lead proved to be important in the game's final tow minutes, as St. Mary's mounted one last furious comeback. The Rattlers closed the game out on a 13-2 run, including three three-pointers from Magee, but it proved to be too little, too late.

TURNING POINT
St. Mary's looked to be grabbing some of the momentum out of the locker room and cut the deficit to single-digits, but Hicks slowed them down with eight straight points to put the Chaps back in front by a comfortable 14-point margin.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Lubbock Christian shot a season-high 57.9 percent (11-19) from behind the arc in the win, breaking their previous season-high of 56.3 percent, which came in the win over Oklahoma Panhandle State. The last time LCU shot better on three-pointers was 12/6/18 when the shot 63.6 percent (7-11) against West Texas A&M.

NEXT UP
The turnaround is quick and the opponent tough, as the Chaps will now turn their attention to No. 5/6 St. Edward's, who will visit the Rip Griffin Center with tipoff at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
