The Baltimore Ravens are reportedly signing a former rival to help out at running back. On Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Ravens are signing Le'Veon Bell to their practice squad, and he will likely be added to the active 53-man roster when he's "ready."
It was reported on Monday that the Ravens were working out several running backs including Bell and Devonta Freeman. Baltimore was in the market for a new ball-carrier as starter J.K. Dobbins went down with a torn ACL in Week 3 of the preseason, and backup Justice Hill recently tore his Achilles.
Bell will be remembered from his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers, as he was considered one of the best players in the NFL from 2013-17. In five years with the Steelers, the Michigan State product was named All-Pro four times, made three Pro Bowls and racked up 7,996 yards from scrimmage and 42 total touchdowns. He was a true dual-threat weapon who owns Steelers franchise records for the most catches by a running back in a single season (85), receiving yards by a running back (854) and the two highest rushing totals in a playoff game.
Things changed for Bell after he sat out the 2018 season due to a contract dispute. He signed a four-year deal with the New York Jets in free agency, and rushed for 789 yards and three touchdowns in 2019 before being released in the middle of the 2020 season. Bell then signed with the Kansas City Chiefs, but did not see much action. In nine games, he rushed 63 times for 254 yards and two touchdowns.
Now 29, Bell is not the versatile playmaker he once was, but he does have an opportunity to make an impact on the league's best rushing offense with Gus Edwards and Lamar Jackson.
