New UNC Running Back Ty Chandler Lets His Play Do the Talking - Chapelboro.com

After the departure of running backs Javonte Williams and Michael Carter to the NFL, UNC head coach Mack Brown needed veteran help in the backfield. This offseason, he got it in the form of Ty Chandler, a transfer from Tennessee using his last year of eligibility to play for Carolina.

For Chandler, the opportunity to play for Brown and the Tar Heels was one he couldn’t pass up.

“When I entered the transfer portal I started reaching out to coaches and… finally got into contact with Coach Brown and he offered me an opportunity to come here to North Carolina,” he told reporters. “I had watched them play against Texas A&M and… saw them out there competing, having fun and… I get here and that’s exactly what they’re doing: competing, having fun and getting better.”

Brown and the rest of the team will rely on Chandler’s experience playing multiple seasons in the SEC with the Volunteers.

“We’re really excited about Ty… number one he’s talented… but he’s older,” Brown said. “He’s played in games against Alabama and Auburn and Georgia and Florida… he won’t be surprised or shocked or big-eyed when he goes to Virginia Tech. And since that room was rather inexperienced, we felt like we needed to bring in an older, more experienced running back. And we’ve been really really excited about Ty.”

Chandler may have only been in Chapel Hill for a short period of time, but he’s already making an impression on teammates, including junior wide receiver Emery Simmons

“Ty is a very quiet, soft-spoken person,” Simmons said. “In the running back room he reminds me of Javonte (Williams). He’s just quiet, he keeps his head down, he works… and that’s it. He’s like a quiet, funny guy. I don’t know how to explain it. His jokes, like… it’s subtle, but it’s funny.”

Running backs coach Larry Porter, who is just starting his second stint in Chapel Hill this season, goes out of his way to connect with his new player.

“Just going to lunch or dinner and seeing him over there in the (cafeteria) and just talking with him and just trying to learn more about him as I have every single guy we have in our room,” Porter said. “As I learn more I’m able to approach him in a way that allows him to grow, understand what he needs… it’s been an easy transition in terms of getting to know him because he will talk to you. You’ve just got to ask him questions.”

And when the question is his experience in Chapel Hill so far, Chandler’s answer comes quickly.

“Man it’s been great here. I won’t say there’s been any challenges,” he said. “The whole staff’s been great, from the strength staff to the coaching staff to everybody helping in this program. So it’s all-around been a great experience, and I’m excited for it. I’m ready to put it all on the line for these guys because they gave me an opportunity.  Just little things, man. Anything I can do to help these boys, I’ll do it.”
