FAIRMONT — After two years of planning, the Interlaken Heritage Days are back this weekend in Fairmont.
The Interlaken Heritage Days committee is a non-profit organization, so they plan the festival around donations they receive from both businesses and individuals. They also do some fundraising events, but with COVID this last year they were unable to hold any sort of fundraising activities.
“We were super lucky that the businesses that donated toward the 2020 event allowed us to hold onto their donations for this year’s event since we had to cancel last year,” committee member Rachel Greeley said. “Without our sponsors, we would not be able to do any of this.”
In past years, the event was Friday through Sunday, but this year it will just be Friday and Saturday. The event will kick off Friday night at Lincoln Park with food vendors Gerhardt’s Catering Truck and The Lemon. At 6:30 Chain Station will play live till 9 p.m.
On Saturday, there are different events spread out including a car show, pedal pull, a plant swap, quilt show and challenge, kiddie parade, parade, summer craft and vendor show, a family street dance and a beer garden.
The car show, parades, family street dance and beer garden will all be in Downtown Plaza. The main parade will line up at the armory, goes past the roundabout and through Downtown Plaza. The parade will end at Lincoln Park.
The quilt show and challenge will be at the Red Rock Center of the Arts. The summer craft, petal pull and vendor show will be located at Gomsrud Park. The plant swap will be at the Lincoln Park Open Shelter.
The committee members chimed in on what they look forward to most when it comes to the Interlaken Heritage Days. Member Dustin Tino said that it’s a really cool event that brings families in who also have fun.
“It’s just really cool,” Toni said. “Especially after being cooped up in quarantine, sequestered and locked down. You can always get out and have some fun.”
For member Cory Walter it’s about seeing the community out there and the impact the event has on people. For Greeley, it’s about seeing the kids have fun. Member Laura Dunker wants to see everybody having a good time and seeing families smile.
The overall message the committee wanted to send to readers and the community is to come out and enjoy the days and celebration. The committee is also always looking for volunteers, new ideas and input to help improve the event.
“It’s neat to see at the end where it just kind of comes together,” Toni said. “You know, miraculously sometimes it feels and everyone puts their little two cents in and it becomes a great event.”
