Greene fair back after pandemic hiatus - Jacksonville Journal-Courier

CARROLLTON —The Greene County Fair has only missed two years since it was first established — once for a war and last year for the COVID-19 pandemic.

The fair returned this year for its 167th annual fair after being cancelled last year with a shortened schedule.

Fair Board Secretary Mark Walker said the board is happy to be able to return this year, despite removing one day from the schedule.

“We had to shorten the fair by a day, because everything has been impacted by COVID,” Walker said. “It has been hard to find shows, grandstand attractions for each night, especially for a small, rural community like we are.”

Last year was only the second time the fair has been cancelled in the fair’s history.

“It was cancelled once during World War II and then last year,” Walker said. “We don’t let much interfere with the fair.”

Though a day has been removed from the fair, Walker said the board is just thankful they are able to have a fair and people will be able to enjoy what is available.

The fair will feature food, animals, art shows, music, the rodeo, and truck and tracker pull, along with the crowning of new royalty.

“We have something for everyone,” Walker said.

The fair board has been working with the Greene County Health Department to develop plans for each phase of Illinois reopening plan. With the state moving to a full reopening, Walker said they are excited to welcome as many people as possible, but are still encourages safe practices.

The Greene County Health Department has supplied hand sanitizing stations and will help provide some safety supplies available for the fair-goers that would like them. It also will be providing vaccination clinics each night.

“We are encouraging social distancing between groups,” Walker said. “We want everyone to be safe while enjoying the fair.”

Walker said it is important for people to have the opportunity experience the fair.

“It’s a little bit of normalcy,” Walker said. “It gives people something to do. We’ve all been cooped up for more than 12 months. We all need to see friends and family and do something fun.”
