'Great to be back': Marshall makes return to state meet - Marshall Independent

MARSHALL — After having their 2020 season canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Marshall boys and girls track and field team will be back at the Class AA meet today held at St. Michael-Albertville High School. The boys meet starts at 10 a.m., with the girls meet starting at 3:30 p.m.

Marshall will have a good mix of experience and youth with its participants, with one relay team and two individuals competing. There are no prelims for each event. Marshall girls coach Marie Sample said it’s a great feeling to be able to compete at the state meet again after the year absence against some of the top competition.

“It feels great to be back. We really missed it last year and I think the kids really missed it,” Marie said. “It’s a great opportunity to go up and compete while again sections this year were probably the first meet that felt like a real, normal meet. There were 18 teams there and it was just nice to be back at it and competing well.”

On the boys side, Eli Salisbury will be competing in the 800 meters. The senior qualified for the state meet with a first-place finish at the Section 2AA championships with a time of 2:00.14 and will run in the first heat of the event, which starts at approximately noon.

Salisbury said it’s a fitting way to end his final year at MHS, adding he hopes to set the school record and earn some hardware.

“It’s amazing and a perfect way to end senior year,” he said. “I want to PR and get the school-record. I also want to try and medal, but I’ll try to run to the best of my ability.”

Marshall boys coach Dave Sample said their biggest takeaways from the section meet are to just maintain their competitiveness and push themselves.

“I think we’re all competitive,” Dave said. “Eli’s times are right in the mix and so are the girls’ times so it’s just about going after it and seeing what we can get done when we get there.”

On the girls side, the 4×800 meter relay team will get the afternoon started in the first heat of the first event at 3:30 p.m. The team of Bellamy Sukalski, Taleigha Bigler, Allyson Sample and Miracle Tucker qualified for the state meet with a second-place finish at the Section 2AA championships with a time of 9:42.85.

Sukalski, a junior, is making her second trip to state after competing in the 4×800 relay in 2019 that placed eighth.

“To have another relay team, especially such a young team, to come back to state is awesome,” she said.

Meanwhile, her teammates will all be making their first state trips. Bigler is a seventh-grader, Allyson Sample is a freshman and Tucker is a sophomore. Sukalski said it’ll be great experience for their group, especially with all of them coming back next season.

“It’s exciting, especially knowing that we will all be back next year as well,” Sukalski said. “We’ve got some young girls and to be able to get out of our section was great.”

Marie Sample said they’ve been working on their leg speed and fine-tuning some things as well as keeping themselves mentally sharp throughout the week.

“A lot of leg speed and just fine-tuning things and keeping kids sharp. We did rest a little bit for sections so we’re maintaining going into state,” Marie said. “Normally we would be on a big taper, but we rested a little. We’re also just working on our mental prep for what we need to do Saturday. We know who we’re racing against, we know what times we need to hit, so we’re going to work on getting those times and getting a good feel at practice.”

Danya Estrada will also be representing Marshall at state, competing in both the 400 meters and the triple jump. The sophomore qualified in the 400 meters with a second-place time of 59.49 seconds and in the triple jump with a second-place leap of 34-07.

Estrada said it feels pretty surreal as she heads into her first state trip.

“It’s pretty cool because going into this season, I didn’t think I would be going to the state meet at all, so I think it’s going to be really fun and a good experience,” she said.

Estrada will compete in the triple jump at approximately 5 p.m. and run in the 400 at about 5:04 p.m. Estrada added her goal is to continue to break her personal bests in both events.

“Just to PR in both events,” Estrada said. “Over the season I’ve been setting PR’s with each meet, so I’m just hoping to PR and try my best and see what I can get.”

Estrada said she’s looking forward to hanging out with her teammates and having fun out on the track.

“Just having fun with my teammates and running, just like we always do,” Estrada said.
