Donald Trump addressed a gathering of supporters and family members at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday morning, giving his final remarks as president before Joe Biden’s noon inauguration.
“I will tell you the future of this country has never been better,” President Trump said. “I wish the new administration great luck and great success. I think they’ll have great success. They have the foundation to do something really spectacular.”
The president used the speech to tout his accomplishments as president, including the 2017 corporate tax cut, the appointing of three conservative Supreme Court justices and historically low unemployment ahead of the coronavirus pandemic.
He also made a point to thank Vice President Mike Pence, with whom he reportedly clashed in the days leading up to the riotous invasion of the Capitol when Pence presided over Congress’s certification of Joe Biden’s election victory.
Pence did not attend the farewell event, with the Washington Post reporting that logistical challenges prevent him from attending that speech and Biden’s inauguration.
Trump also hinted that his political career may not be over. “We will be back in some form,” he said.
The president departed the Maryland military facility on Air Force One in for Palm Beach, Fla., where he will reportedly take up residence at his Mar-a-Lago club.
