UPDATE (Jan. 29, 10:30 am ET): With a few days left in the European transfer window, the market for New York Red Bulls and US national team center back Aaron Long is heating up.
ESPN's Jeff Carlisle reports Premier League champion Liverpool FC are monitoring Long with a potential loan deal on the cards. Liverpool are suffering an injury crisis at center back, with Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez already out with long-term injuries, then Joel Matip was substituted out of their game Thursday with a muscle issue. Stand-in center back Fabinho missed the game with an injury as well, leaving fellow center mid Jordan Henderson starting as an emergency defender.
MLSsoccer.com reported Thursday that Long remains the subject of interest from clubs in England and France, though no offer has been filed yet. The Washington Post's Steven Goff noted Championship side Reading were among the clubs interested.
The transfer deadline in England is Monday at 6 pm ET. One source noted any potential European move for Long "will go right down to the wire." He is currently with the USMNT, training ahead of their friendly with Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday.
ORIGINAL (Jan. 28, 5 pm ET): New York Red Bulls and US national team center back Aaron Long is the subject of interest from clubs in England and France ahead of the European January transfer window closing, sources tell MLSsoccer.com.
The Washington Post's Steven Goff reported that Championship side Reading are set to make a move for the player. According to sources, the Red Bulls have not yet received any offer for Long.
There will be a resolution soon as January transfer window closes in England and France on Monday evening.
Long, 28, was named MLS Defender of the Year in 2018, anchoring RBNY's backline en route to a Supporters' Shield title. He has 105 career MLS appearances and is a regular starter with the USMNT under Gregg Berhalter, earning 18 caps to date.
RBNY reportedly rejected "multiple bids" from West Ham for Long in 2019 while MLSsoccer.com also reported that summer that the Red Bulls rejected an offer from a French club.
Seattle Sounders star Jordan Morris joined Championship side Swansea City on loan this week while D.C. United's Paul Arriola could possibly follow.
Long is currently with the USMNT as they prepare to face Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday night.
