Drought continues: Vikings haven’t made playoffs in back-to-back seasons since 2008-09 - TwinCities.com-Pioneer Press

The Vikings’ drought of not making the playoffs in consecutive seasons continues.

Minnesota (6-9) was eliminated from the postseason with its 52-33 loss to the Saints on Friday in New Orleans. With one game remaining, the Vikings are assured of a losing season for the first time since they went 7-9 in head coach Mike Zimmer’s first season of 2014.

The Vikings haven’t made the playoffs in consecutive seasons since 2008 and 2009. Since Zimmer arrived, they’ve missed out in the even years of 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2020, and made the playoffs in the odd years of 2015, 2017 and 2019.

“It’s tough, obviously, coming into the season wanting to make it to the final game and do big things,” said safety Anthony Harris, who joined the Vikings in 2015. “Now, at this point, each week is about going out there and representing your brand as Minnesota Vikings, as an individual.”

The Vikings close the season Sunday, Jan. 3 in Detroit in a meaningless game. The Lions (5-9) already have been eliminated from the playoffs.

The Vikings started 1-5 before winning five of six games to get to 6-6 and move into the seventh and final playoff spot in the NFC. But since then, they have lost three straight games.

“It’s definitely something that us as a team, we’re not happy about,” second-year tight end Irv Smith Jr. said of being eliminated. “It’s something we didn’t plan.”

BRIEFLY

— Due to an undisclosed injury, Vikings rookie cornerback Cameron Dantzler did not play from late in the third quarter through the rest of the game. Dantzer was last on the field when New Orleans scored a touchdown with 4:38 left in the third quarter. When the Saints got the ball back for the final play of the quarter, he had been replaced by Chris Jones.

— Justin Jefferson had six catches for 85 yards, giving the rookie 79 receptions for 1,267 yards this season. He needs 47 yards against the Lions in the season finale to break Randy Moss’ 1998 team rookie record of 1,313 yards receiving in a season. Moss’ figure is third in NFL history for a rookie, behind 1,473 by Houston’s Bill Groman in 1960 and 1,377 by Arizona’s Anquan Boldin in 2003.

— Dalvin Cook carried 15 times for 73 yards, and now has 1,557 yards this season. He became the third different running back in team history to reach 1,500 yards. Adrian Peterson had 2,097 in 2012 and 1,760 in 2008, and Robert Smith ran for 1,521 in 2000.

— The struggles continued for Vikings kicker Dan Bailey, who missed an extra point in the third quarter. Bailey, who did make his other three extra-point attempts, has missed eight kicks in the past four games. In those games, he is 4 of 8 on field-goal attempts and 7 of 11 on extra points.
