What is it that takes you back to better times in your life? For me it’s friends and the music we made together. This coming Friday we open a new chapter in our lives. I’m ready to say goodbye to 2020 and roll out the red carpet for 2021. If you are like me, you’re hoping for a much better time in 2021 than you had in 2020.
It will once again be time to think about those dreaded New Year’s resolutions. You know, the things we really believe we should do to make the new year better than the one we just left behind. I am somehow reluctant to make New Year’s resolutions. To begin with I really don’t know what to do with the ones I made last year that didn’t make it to the “do list.” Should I just renew them, hoping that by some miracle they make it through the process of “getting done” this year? Shamefully, I’m not sure I even remember what they were. In spite of my shortcomings, I’m going to stick my neck out again this year and resolve once again to be a better friend.
Sometimes we tend to get comfortable in a friendship and then we begin to take that friendship for granted. Are there special friends you want to hold close to your heart this coming year? Do you ever find yourself thinking about old friends and the fun, crazy times you had with them and suddenly you realize that you have returned to a better time?
I have had many friends come and go throughout my life. Some come and stay for a short time; others appear and just keep hanging in there with me. What amazes me about my friends both past and present is that they seem to pop into my life just when I think they have been lost forever. Old friends are such a valuable asset these days. During the Christmas season, I received a card from a friend who moved to the mountains several years ago. Another card came from an old college friend that I have not heard from in over 20 years. How delightful to connect with these friends once again.
I enjoy thinking about my friends near and far. The memories they left in the corners of my heart often take me back to better times. We need to pay more attention to our friends. Savor those precious “ahhh” moments with them and let them know how important they are to us. By sharing a special place in our hearts with them, we can gain a better understanding of ourselves.
What an austere existence our lives would be without friends; we are all connected in one way or another. I have concluded that hope, miracles, faith, family and friends are the glue that holds our lives together. Distance often gives us the opportunity to have friends who seem more like family than our blood relatives.
Are you going out on the proverbial limb this year and resolving to make this year better than last year? If we can just be the kind of friend to others that we want to have for ourselves, then 2021 will be full of better times to save in your memory bank.
