Letter | White people should step back from limelight - Santa Cruz Sentinel

I was dismayed to read Ms. Da Souza’s recent letter to the editor attacking Ms. Brenda Griffin, president of our local NAACP. Maybe Ms. Da Souza is unaware that a big element of white racism is Eurocentrism, domination and white folks not understanding that to move forward in solidarity for the good of all, we white folks need to step back from the limelight, from being central, and support people of the global majority on their terms, not ours.

I appreciated that Ms. Griffin gave our police chief, Andy Mills, the book “White Fragility” by Robin DiAngelo, which he says helped open his eyes to the suffering black folks experience. I would ask Ms. Da Souza to reach out to anti-racist white folks to process her hurt feelings and then hopefully gain understanding and apologize to Ms. Griffin and truly build unity. I applaud Ms. Griffin’s leadership in our community.

The Sentinel welcomes your letters to the editor. Letters should be short, no more than 150 words. We do not accept anonymous letters. Letter-writers should include their full name as well as a street address and telephone number. We don’t publish those details in the newspaper, but need the information for verification purposes. Occasionally, we reject letters simply because we’ve had so many on the same subject. Submit your letters online at www.santacruzsentinel.com/submit-letters.
