NYFW Is Back: Here’s What V.F. Editors Will Be Wearing - Vanity Fair

Fashion week returns and with it comes editor-approved style.

New York Fashion Week kicks off this week. For the first time since February 2020, in-person shows are back and we couldn’t be more excited. This year’s NYFW schedule is jam-packed with shows anchored by quintessential American designers including Altuzarra, Thom Browne, Tory Burch, Markarian, Michael Kors, Tom Ford, Prabal Gurung, Proenza Schouler, and Victor Glemaud, mixed in with a host of presentations from new names. While we’re making our rounds throughout New York City, it’s important that we dress the part. Read ahead to see what Vanity Fair editors will be wearing to celebrate NYFW’s triumphant return.

Nicole Chapoteau, Fashion Director

“Fashion week is one of my favorite parts of my job. I love the pomp and circumstance of it all, everyone getting dressed up in all of their favorite things, the excitement of seeing a designer’s new collection…it’s all very exciting.”

“I have two outfit styles I veer towards (jeans and a blouse or sweater, and a simple-ish dress). This Molly Goddard dress has been on my wishlist for much of the summer. I love the oversized sailor collar, shape, and color. Not too fussy, not too bright, not too short or long—just right. I’m still not really ready to tackle the world in heels, let alone the Olympic event that is fashion week. I love a flat Mary Jane that feels grown-up and more interesting than a ballet flat but just as comfortable and versatile. Since fashion week will be the first time I’ve been in a crowd since the last in-person global fashion tour-de-force in early 2020 and, even though I’m vaccinated, you can’t be too careful these days. I’ll be happily wearing an evolvetogether KN95 mask. They’re comfortable and sleek enough to go with whatever I have on.”

“My approach to fashion week dressing is more about stealth mode. Backstage, where beauty looks come together in a crush of models, hot tools, and makeup stations, it feels right to keep a low profile. A pair of high-waisted black jeans has polish along with functional pockets; Bottega Veneta flats have a similar running-around-town practicality, with bonus points for their strong silhouette and nubby texture. Still, there’s fun to be had, with the lacework on this Bode shirt. And by dinner, it’ll be time for a little color, a little wine. This Gucci dress reminds me that while it might be September, it’s still officially summer.”

“This season, comfort is my number one priority. New York has been wildly hot recently and I want to make sure I stay stylish while still remaining comfortable in the heat. My go-to trousers recently have been the Bottega wide-leg trousers. I own them in every color and they have been my favorites since Daniel Lee released them in his fall 2019 collection. When it comes to shirting I live in the Thom Browne cotton oxford—it’s breathable and stylish (and I own more than I would like to admit). Shoes are crucial when running from show to show. You are on your feet all day and you want to make sure you can last till at least 10 p.m. because you don’t know what event or dinner you are going to have to go to. A high-top Converse does the job for me, I have and will continue to say they are the perfect sneaker. Lastly, one thing I learned when I first got into this industry was to always carry a notebook. While at the shows, I write down my favorite looks, accessories or even brands I need to take a second look at. Hermes makes the best mini-notebook, it fits in your back pocket and is great for anything you can think of.”

“It’s hard to believe that we’ve been without an in-person fashion week in over a year. Returning back to the normalcy of it all is equal parts exciting and nerve-wracking. While I always look forward to seeing new collections and going on an adventure through the city, I’ve always approached my dressing for fashion week with the notion that comfort is king. Believe it or not, The Row’s Constance heels are quite comfortable and offer the minimalistic ’90s appeal I admire in a sandal. I have discovered that green is truly my color, and this lovely shirt dress by Christopher Esber checks all of the boxes for its chicness, ease, and wearability. Not to mention, it also reminds me of Gwyneth Paltrow in Great Expectations. No outfit is complete without a great bag that carries all of your daily essentials, including my vaxx card, hand sanitizer, and extra masks, topped off with the most perfect sunnies. Elisa Johnson makes the best sunglasses that look great with any outfit.”

“For Fashion Week this year, I am going for chic, effortless comfort with some bold color statements. Staud’s two-toned Shoko ribbed knit sweater dress is one of my favorite dresses that I own and my go-to for an easy, yet trendy outfit. The incredibly versatile knit piece can be styled in several ways and works well as a perfect day-to-night staple. For the upcoming season, I am excited to start sporting boots—particularly white boots. Holding true to my zeal of all things Staud, I love their Lars leather boot. The ’90s-inspired, square-toe shoe is a little taller than an ankle bootie and has a sleek, fitted silhouette. I’m also a huge fan of the shoe’s perfect 2-inch block heel, ideal for comfort and efficiency when it comes to hitting the New York streets and running from show to show. And for this mostly color-neutral look, I’ve got to add a bold pop of color with this Jacquemus Cuicui shoulder bag. The suede rectangular bag (with a convenient built-in vaxx card holder) is perfect for the summer-to-fall transition.”

“Returning to in-person fashion week shows for the first time in over a year calls for making a bold statement. For me, that means bright, poppy colors and stand-out pieces. I’ve had my eye on this Bottega dress for a while now for it’s unique ‘parakeet’ green hue and knit design—a huge trend that is sure to carry over from summer to fall. Everyone who knows me knows my staple shoe is a cowboy boot, and this Isabel Marant shoe is one of my favorites. Not only does it add character to any outfit, but the low heel and comfortability is necessary when running from show to show. To top the outfit off are these West African mask-inspired earrings by Khiry—one of the fine jewelry designers I’m most anticipating to see new styles from this NYFW.”

“While we’re all navigating getting dressed again, I’m leaning on my staples to ease me in. Even though it might still feel like summer in New York, I’m ready to usher in fall with my tried and true leather pants. I love that this Agolde pair is sustainable, using hides that otherwise would have been discarded. Dries van Noten is one of my favorites—his pieces are always the easiest to wear and elevate a look like no other, and this ’70s vibe t-shirt is no exception. I’ve been obsessed with pretty much every pair of Bottega Veneta shoes that Daniel Lee has released. These loafer mules are a great seasonal transition shoe, and give me enough of a lift to look put together, while the block heel keeps them comfortable to ease me into wearing real shoes again. Nothing completes a look like a fun piece of jewelry. I’m leaning towards this Bea Bongiasca ring that I’ve been obsessing over.”

“I love letting my look do the talking and for me that means the bolder the better. I have always had an eye for animal print, so the volume and silhouette of this Khaite dress feels like a fresh take on the beloved leopard print that may fade from the trend cycle every few years but always make a triumphant return. Pairing this dress with a low-heeled boot is not only functional for running from show to show, it’s chic! The sophistication of the square toe is a nice compliment to the playfulness of this dress. The cool-toned blue mini bag feels like the cherry on top—adding some color, intrigue, and structure to make for a dynamic pairing. Health and safety are my ultimate priority these days, but when it comes to a mask, I like to keep it low-key. The simplicity and seamless design on the Skims mask makes all the difference. This season, I am really excited to witness how designers will either harness the current zeitgeist through underlying themes in their collections or evade it through escapism on the runway.”
