BOUNCING BACK INTO FORM: After early-season hiccup, Blue Streaks getting back on track - The Saratogian

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The Saratoga boy’s soccer team has gotten off to a strong start but the new season hasn’t come without its adversity.

“We had a little bit of an obstacle in Averill Park, but overall we’ve had a pretty good start to the season,” said Saratoga Head Coach, Jeff Geller. “We have a lot of speed this year and our biggest key is going to be playing to our target players.”

After a scrimmage with Bethlehem the Blue Streaks opened the 2021 campaign with an 8-0 victory over Schenectady on September 9.

Then came the hiccup.

“We’re a confident team and I think we went in and overlooked them and it hurt us,” Saratoga senior Garrett Farr said of their game against Averill Park.

The Blue Streaks dropped that September 11 game to the Warriors by a score of 2-1.

“While we didn’t appreciate losing to Averill Park early on, it certainly brought us back to reality,” Geller said. “Each game we’re trying to get a little bit better, so hopefully we’ll be running on all cylinders when it’s time for sections.”

“It was a learning experience and we were able to come back the next game and beat a good Bethlehem team, while we were down a few key players,” Farr added. “We overlooked Averill Park and that really backfired on us, so we came into that one really prepared and ready to play.”

The game against Bethlehem on September 14 featured a classic 1-0 contest against a young, talented Eagles squad.

“We were missing several key players, for various reasons, so to beat a team as skilled as Bethlehem, I think we showed that we have the personnel that can come in and do the job for us when someone goes down,” Geller said, who is building a lot of confidence is using his entire roster this season.

“I have no problem looking down the bench and going with the second or third line guys, there really isn’t any drop in talent. These guys are very skilled and it’s exciting to have a group like this.”

Saratoga would go on to defeat Troy 6-1 and then Albany 2-0, improving to 4-1 before facing off against Niskayuna on Saturday September 25.

“It’s good that we didn’t let the Averill Park game have an effect on us, that we came back strong,” Farr added. “We know we’re not going to go undefeated now since we lost the early one and now we just have to focus on getting better everyday.”

DISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH

So far in their first five games, Saratoga has scored a total of 18 goals, with nine different players having scored.

Four players have scored three goals, including juniors Nicholas Varghese, Evan Hallett, and Manasseh Turenne, as well as sophomore Ryan Farr. Charlie Barnes has scored twice, while Garrett Farr, Timothee Boyer, Joe Radovic, and Xavier Ruscio each have one goal.

Nine different Streaks have also recorded an assist to open the season.

Joe Radovic leads the way with five and Timothee Boyer is just behind with four.

Nicholas Varghese, Charlie Barnes, Nico LaRosa,  Manasseh Turenne, Ryan Farr, Huck Patton and Aidan Rosettie each have one assist.

THINGS TO KNOW

If there’s any two things to remember about the team this season, it’s that they’re very deep and that they have a ton of speed.

“We have a great team this year. We’re looking for sections and we have the personnel to do it. We have great starters and a bench ready to come in when they’re called,” Farr said. “We have to get better at keeping the ball. Last year we’d play it forward and just hope that our speed on the outside would be able to get to it. This year I feel like we have the talent to play around every team and not lose the ball.”

While the Saratoga bench showed what they could do in the game against Bethlehem, the deep roster really stands out to Farr during scrimmages at practices.

“I think it’s just everyone’s ability to play,” he said. “We could set up a scrimmage in practice and do starters versus non-starters and it will still be a great, intense game. The non-starters could beat the starters and it’s fun having a team like that.”
