The local Black Lives Matter group, Indy 10, held a rally on Monument Circle Saturday.
The event marked one year since Dreasjon Reed and McHale Rose were shot and killed by Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers.
Dreasjon Reed’s mother Demetree Wynn spoke to the crowd of supporters who were asked to “say his name” among others including George Floyd.
“Why did Dreasjon Reed have to be a part of that list,” Wynn said, “why is my son part of that list.”
The event came after a week of action for the group where organizers held trainings, remembrance ceremonies and stocked pantry shelves.
The crowd of about 100 fell into other familiar chants for justice and police defunding. But this May in downtown Indianapolis, it was against a backdrop of wedding photo shoots and party bikes on the circle.
A year ago when people started protesting for police reform and social justice, the pandemic shut down had just started to ease.
Speakers including Indy10 leader Leah Derray urged supporters to become more involved.
“To be honest, too many of you all are going to trainings and not doing anything with the information,” Indy10 leader Leah Derray.
Leaders said people can show up at City County Council meetings and join cop watches.
The group pointed out demands that still stand one year later. They include defunding IMPD, abolishment of the FOP and investment in communities.
“Speaking means nothing, actions mean everything,” Demetree Wynn said, “do something about it.”
The group also called for the firing of IMPD officer Steven Scott who was heard making a comment about the need for a closed casket after Reed was killed.
Reed’s family has asked the FBI to revisit Reed’s case.
