BRIDGEPORT — Twenty-nine years ago, Father Panick Village was among the city’s housing projects — and that’s where Gary Potak found himself, looking to buy pot, when police say he was fatally shot in 1992.

Thursday marked the anniversary of Potak’s death on May 6, 1992. His homicide has since been classified as a cold case, with all leads exhausted. As with any cold case, police are awaiting any piece of information that could reignite the investigation.

That spring day in 1992, Potak and Charles “Chick” Gombrewicz — who died in 2005 — drove to Father Panik Village to buy marijuana, according to the state’s Cold Case Unit.

As Potak and Gombrewicz circled the housing project, two individuals crossed the street in front of their vehicle. Potak was driving and stopped to let the two men cross the street.

One of the two individuals walked to the driver’s side of the car and asked Potack what he was looking at, according to the Cold Case Unit. Potak told him he wanted to buy pot, and the man pulled out a gun and told the two to get out of the vehicle.

Gombrewicz, the passenger, got out of the car, heard gunshots and ran off. He later realized Potak had been shot and died.

Bridgeport police are tasked with overseeing the investigation.

Officials did not return requests for comment on the case.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Cold Case Unit’s tip line at 860-548-0606 or toll-free at 1-866-623-8058. The unit can be reached by email at cold.case@ct.gov.
