Campaign

The race for county commission had heated up as filing ended April 15.

Democrats filing were Frank L. Marbry, Paul B. Poplin, Johnny Davis, Walter G. Fisher and Eugene M. Langley. With only five filing, this meant there would not be a primary.

Republicans filing on the last day were John E. Cranford, Hazel D. Efird, Berry Lambert, Robert M. Lovelady and Dewey R. Sides. Other Republicans seeking seats on the board were Bobby Harold Barbee and M. Glenn Lowder.

Church

Ground had been broken by the congregation of First Presbyterian Church of Albemarle for its new Education Building in ceremonies Sunday morning.

Cowan

Oliven T. Cowan, for the past three years assistant superintendent of the Stanly County Schools, had tendered his resignation to the county board effective July 1.

He planned to return to the University of North Carolina for work toward a doctor’s degree.

Oakboro

H. Wayne Howard had been elected president of the Oakboro Junior Chamber of Commerce for the coming year, succeeding G. Max Hatley, who had been named state director.

Other officers chosen by the club were Jerry R. Hartsell, first vice president; William C. Love Jr., second vice president; Doug Burgess, secretary; Darrell Huneycutt, treasurer; Billy Taylor and Dykie Austin, two-year directors; and Roy Hinson, jaybird.

Golf

Coach Alex Gibbs’ Bulldogs were going “great guns” in current season golf action, holding a 20-stroke lead over Asheboro’s Blue Comets after two meets. Members of the squad were Banks Garrison, Tom Webb, Jody Huneycutt and Jimmy Stockton.
