Madden Monday: Evgeni Malkin 'can't go back on the first power play' - TribLIVE

After a week away from the “Madden Monday” podcast, Mark Madden and I have plenty stored up to discuss surrounding the Pittsburgh Penguins. Particularly the improved play of goalie Tristan Jarry since his six-goal third-period debacle against the New Jersey Devils Tuesday night.

Mark was less than delicate in his assessment of Jarry the next afternoon on his 105.9 The X radio program. But it appears that the 25-year-old netminder answered the call allowing just one goal in his next two starts against the Devils and Boston Bruins.

Those games resulted in a 5-1 win over the Devils and a 30-save 1-0 shutout over the Bruins Sunday.

“Jarry’s not a proven playoff goalie,” Madden said this week. “And he has some horrible moments (like the third period of that New Jersey game). So for him to win a game 1-0 against the Bruins that had a playoff atmosphere, that speaks highly of him.”

Should the Penguins face the Bruins in a best-of-seven playoff series, it was nice to see Mike Sullivan’s team win a tight, low-scoring, sound, systematic game.

“Systemic play. Just playing the game the right way. The Penguins built even more faith in their style of play come the postseason. Because that is how they are going to need to play a lot of nights. Especially against Boston,” Madden said.

But now the question is, can (or will) Evgeni Malkin and Brandon Tanev fit in with that same style when they return to the lineup?

“I think Tanev will,” Madden said. “Geno wants to play the way Geno wants to play.”

Yes. Malkin coming back to play within the system and structure put forth by the club over the last six weeks since his absence due to a lower-body injury is a concern. Let alone his own level of effectiveness and conditioning.

And Madden also worries about what will happen to the power play.

“Geno can’t go back on the first power play. He just can’t,” Madden insisted. “It works better this way, and it’s not just because Jared McCann is out there shooting the puck as often and as well as he is. It’s because (Sidney Crosby) has jumped into the Geno spot on the right half-wall where Sid has always wanted to play.

“Geno playing there, with Sid going down low on the power play is Sid accommodating Geno. Sid has played great there in Geno’s absence.”

That said the Penguins power play has cooled a bit lately, scoring just three times in the last seven games. But the unit has scored at a 32% rate in the 19 games since Malkin has been sidelined (March 18). It’s at 23.1% for the season.

Also in this week’s podcast, Madden and I dissect the Steelers draft, Mike Tomlin’s contract extension, the Pirates’ decent start and the failed “Super League.”
