Local organizations participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day - KSNB Local 4

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The Central Nebraska Council on Alcoholism and Addictions partnered with GIPD and the Hall County’s Sheriff’s Office for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., they collected unused medications at both Super Saver locations. People could drop-off pills but needles, liquids and inhalers were not accepted.

In 2016 studies showed 6.2 million americans misused prescription drugs and majority of users get them from their family or friends.

“I can tell you it’s not as prevalent as a misuse problem as alcohol and marijuana, however it is here and it does happen and opioid dependence for anyone can happen in as little as five days,” said Substance Abuse Prevention Project Katie Usasz.

Prescription Drug Take Back Day happens every year in April and October.

People who missed it can call the Central Nebraska Council on Alcoholism and Addictions at (308) 385-5520 to take unused medications year round.
