OPENING TIPS:
- Wichita State welcomes Emporia State on Friday for bonus non-conference action at Charles Koch Arena. Sedgwick County has approved up to 10 percent capacity (a little over 1,000 fans).
- The Shockers won their AAC opener Tuesday at Tulsa, 69-65. They built a 17-point first half lead then made just enough plays to hang onto it after the Hurricanes rallied to within two in the final seconds.
- Freshman Ricky Council IV posted 13 points and eight rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench. Alterique Gilbert (13 pts, 4 ast), Trey Wade (11 pts, 7 reb) and Isaiah Poor Bear-Chandler (10 pts, 5 reb) also had big nights.
- ESU suffered its first loss Thursday against Lincoln. The Hornets cut an 18-point lead to one in the final minute but ran out of steam. It was the team's first action in 19 days following COVID-related cancelations. The Hornets will make up for lost time this week with three games in three nights, continuing Sunday vs. Central Missouri.
- Prior to the stoppage, ESU was out to its first 3-0 start since 2012 and receiving votes in the Division II polls.
- The Shockers are on a rare two-game home losing streak. They'll try to avoid their first three-game home skid since January, 2007.
- A win over ESU would be their 100th at Charles Koch Arena since the start of the 2013-14 season.
- Friday's game is a regular season contest for WSU and an exhibition for ESU.
- Since 1973, when the NCAA reorganized into three divisons, WSU is 33-0 in regular season games vs. non-Division I programs and 22-0 in preseason exhibitions.
- All-time WSU is 42-28 against ESU in regular season games and 7-0 in exhibitions. The teams last met early in the 2015-16 season.
- Sophomore guard Tyson Etienne battled foul trouble at Tulsa but is WSU's leading scorer on the year (15.8 ppg). He's twice made the AAC Honor Roll this season.
- Gilbert -- a graduate transfer from UConn -- has scored in double-figures in all four games. He's averaging 14.5 points and a team-high 3.5 assists.
- Five other Shockers average between 5.7 and 7.8 points.
- Despite three new point guards and limited practice time, WSU ranks among the national leaders in fewest turnovers (9th, 9.5 as of Thursday).
- The Shockers are in Tampa, Fla. on Tuesday to face USF. Both teams are out to 1-0 start in American play. WSU swept last years series and is 3-1 against the Bulls since joining the league. Tip time is 6 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
TRENDING:
- Missouri (15) and Oklahoma State (17) piled up fast break points against the Shockers last week. That wasn't the case Tuesday against Tulsa, which managed just four.
- The Shockers have been out-shot in all four games but are still having success scoring the ball. They're rebounding well on the offensive end (13.3-per-game ranks third in the AAC), limiting turnovers (9.5-per-game ranks among the top-10 nationally) and avoiding blocks (just six through four games). Among AAC teams, only SMU (8.8) is averaging for three-pointers-per-game than WSU (7.8).
- Tyson Etienne (7th, 15.8) and Alterique Gilbert (10th, 14.5) both rank among the AAC's top-10 in scoring.
- Per KenPom, Etienne leads the AAC in turnover rate (4.3-per-100 possessions) and ranks among the top-40 nationally. He has seven assists with just two turnovers in 121 minutes.
FOR STARTERS:
- WSU has three starters (Tyson Etienne, Dexter Dennis and Alterique Gilbert) averaging at least 30 minutes and a fourth (Trey Wade) at 28.7-per-game. In 2019-20 no Shocker averaged more than 27 minutes.
- Through four games, Shocker starters are averaging 70.4% of the minutes (up from 63.2% last year).
- In the past two decades, only two others teams have topped the 70%-mark over a full season:
- Starters on the 2007-08 team (led by Matt Brauer, Phillip Thomasson, P.J. Couisnard , Ramon Clemente & Gal Mekel) accounted for 73.1% of all minutes.
- The 2014-15 team (with a core of Ron Baker, Fred VanVleet, Tekele Cotton, Evan Wessel and Darius Carter) was on the long end of some lopsided scores, but its starters still accounted for 70.1% of minutes.
- The three lowest percentages in the last 20 years? Try the 2015-16 (58.5%), 2010-11 (58.2%) and 2016-17 teams (57.6%).
HIT THE TARGET; WIN THE PRIZE:
- Over the last two seasons, the Shockers are 23-1 when scoring at least 65 points and 1-9 when scoring less than 65. The exceptions are an 80-79 home loss to Cincinnati last February and a 54-41 road victory at USF in late January, 2020.
- Over the last two seasons, WSU is 19-2 when hitting at least 40% from the field, 18-1 when making at least a third of its three-point tries and a perfect 16-0 when outshooting its opponent.
POWERED BY TYSON:
Tuesday's game at Tulsa was sophomore Tyson Etienne's 35th in a Shocker uniform. His 72 three-pointers are the most ever by a WSU player at that stage.
Most 3-Point Field Goals // First 35 Career Games:
72 -- Tyson Etienne (2019-Pr.)
68 -- Chad Elstun (1992-94) – Made 1 in Game No. 36
68 -- Landry Shamet (2015-18) +1
67 -- Clevin Hannah (2008-10) +3
67 -- Aaron Hogg (2002-04) +2
66 -- Randy Burns (2001-05) +
63 -- Ron Baker (2012-16) +1
63 -- Jason Perez (1996-00) +0
THE SERIES WITH ESU:
- This is the 71st regular season meeting in an all-time series that dates back to 1907. However, it's only the third since 1954. WSU leads 42-28 (22-12 in Wichita).
- The teams played twice and sometimes three times a year prior to World War II when they were members of the Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) and later the Central Intercollegiate Conference (CIC).
- WSU jumped to the Missouri Valley Conference in 1945 but the teams continued to play in the non-conference for the next decade. The Shockers defeated the Hornets in the championship of the 1948 Emporia Invitational – played at White Auditorium. In their most recent appearance in ESU's historic venue (Mar. 1, 1954), a Shocker team that came in ranked 14th nationally rolled 79-57 and improved to 26-3. Five days later, they played the school's first-ever NIT.
- In 2002 the NCAA relaxed its exhibition rules, allowing Division I schools to schedule D-II opponents. The teams played seven times over the next 10 years in preseason exhibitions.
- WSU twice scheduled ESU for regular season games in 2013 and 2015, winning both.
- The Shockers have won five-straight in the series, with hall of fame coach Ralph Miller chipping in the first three.
RECENT GAMES:
Nov. 9, 2013 – In the first of 35-consecutive Shocker wins to begin the season, 16th-ranked WSU defeated ESU, 93-50. Sophomore Fred VanVleet made his first career start (12 points, six rebounds, six assists, zero turnovers and four steals). Ron Baker went 7-for-9 from the field on his way to 17 points and six assists. WSU used a 16-0 run to go up 20-4 and held the visiting Hornets to just 13 first-half points. A 25-point halftime lead grew to 30 (48-18) near the 17:00-mark. ESU got as close at 17 with 7:25 left after an 18-5 run.
Nov. 21, 2015 – Playing without VanVleet (hamstring), No. 9 WSU rode its defense and 23 point from fellow senior Baker to a 76-54 victory. Gregg Marshall notched his 400th career win. VanVleet's string of 112-consecutive games and 73-straight starts ended due to a hamstring injury suffered during the preseason and reaggravated during a loss at Tulsa earlier in the week. Freshman Landry Shamet instead made his first career start and finished with nine points. The following day he was diagnosed with what would turn out to be a season-ending foot injury.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS:
- Call it "The Battle for Matfield Green." The NCAA Division II Hornets are located just an hour up the Kansas Turnpike in Emporia.
- ESU is a member of one of D-II's toughest leagues, the MIAA, which has produced three of the last six national champions.
- The Hornets were picked 12th out of 14 teams in the MIAA preseason poll but won their first three games -- all on the road.
- ESU defeated MIAA rival Fort Hays State, 68-66, back on Nov. 21. That's the same FHSU team that made national headlines last week when it upset Kansas State at Bramlage Coliseum.
- ESU is led the by scoring duo of Jumah-Ri Turner (15.3) and Austin Downing (13.3).
- Third-year ESU coach Craig Doty led Graceland University to the 2018 NAIA D-I national championship and won a pair of NJCAA D-III titles at Rock Valley College.
MATCHUP MASHUP:
- The Hornet roster includes four native Kansans. Senior forward Marquis McCray played at Wichita Heights, and 6-10 sophomore center Mason Thiessen was an all-state performer at nearby Inman High.
- WSU is facing a non-Division II opponent in the regular season for the first time since 2016 when it defeated Southern Nazarene, 87-57.
- The Shockers are 13-0 against non-DI's over the last 30 seasons. The closest call was a nine-point win over Alaska-Fairbanks in December, 1999.
- In exhibitions (all since 2002 when the NCAA changed its rules), the Shockers are 20-0 against Division II schools and 2-0 againt NAIA teams.
WSU Regular Season Games vs. Non-Division I Opponents (Last 30 Years):

Dec. 18, 2020 -- Emporia St.% = Maui Invitational (Lahaina, Hawaii)
^ = NCAA Division III school (all others listed were D-II at time of game)
NON-CONFERENCE CONFIDENCE:
WSU has an impressive 112-28 (.800) record in non-conference regular season contests since the start of the 2009-10 season.
A SHOCKER WIN WOULD...
... make them 3-2 with back-to-back wins.
... be their sixth-straight against Emporia State.
... up their all-time series lead to 43-28 (23-12 in Wichita), including 3-0 since 2013.
... make them 34-0 vs. non-D-I's since 1973.
... make them 56-0 (including exhibitions) against non-D-I's in that same span.
... be their 100th win at Charles Koch Arena since the start of the 2013-14 season (100-11, .901).
A SHOCKER LOSS WOULD...
... be their first to Emporia State since 1949.
... be their first to a non-Division I program since the NCAA split into its current three division format in 1973 (33-1).
... be less good than a win.
UP NEXT:
The Shockers dive back into conference play Tuesday with a game at USF. Tip time from Tampa is 6 p.m. CT (7 p.m. ET) on ESPN+.
