One New Jersey town is powering up with 1.21 gigawatts today in honor of “Back to the Future.”
Back to the Future Day is celebrated annually on Oct. 21 because it’s the date that Emmett “Doc” Brown and Marty McFly travel to the future in “Back to the Future Part II.”
Five years ago, on the actual “future” date in the 1989 film — Oct. 21, 2015 — fans of the beloved movie franchise celebrated the 30th anniversary of the first installment of the time-travel saga. Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox even starred in a “Back to the Future”-themed car commercial filmed at the Bendix Diner in Hasbrouck Heights.
To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the 1985 film, Bernardsville Cinema is hosting a week of movie screenings with replicas of several vehicles from the films, including the DeLorean time machine that Brown and McFly use to visit their past and future selves. The celebration will also showcase real props from the films, like Marty’s hoverboard from his trip to 2015.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s been quite a rough year for movie theaters in general, let alone independent cinemas. Harvey Goldberg, who assumed ownership of the Bernardsville theater from Bow Tie Cinemas in November 2019, says theater owners like him are at the mercy of the movie studios, which have been relying more on streaming and on demand releases during the pandemic.
Goldberg had hoped to use the event to support the business. However, Universal Studios, which owns the “Back to the Future” films, would get 50% of sales if the theater were to sell tickets, he says.
Instead, the event will benefit Downtown Bernardsville, a local nonprofit. In lieu of tickets, people are making donations to secure “time passes" that include access to “Back to the Future” films and paraphernalia. Since movie theaters were allowed to reopen in September, Bernardsville Cinema has been available for private parties but has remained closed for regular movies, so this will be a special event.
“They’re such classic films,” Goldberg says. “Each generation wants to see it all over again, especially on the big screen."
“Back to the Future” and its two sequels will be screening at the cinema’s various theaters through Saturday, Oct. 24, with seating at 25% capacity in keeping with COVID-19 restrictions. People can take photos with the replica vehicles, which include the DeLorean, and starting on Saturday, Marty’s pickup truck and Mayor Goldie Wilson’s van. Guests are invited to arrive dressed as their favorite characters from the movies.
The cars are the property of two diehard “Back to the Future” fans: Olivia Manning, the founder of Downtown Bernardsville, and her husband Tim, who serves on its board of directors alongside Mayor Mary Jane Canose.
When Olivia and Tim got married four years ago, the DeLorean played a key role in the party.
“We actually drove it into the reception,” Olivia says. When they’re not bringing the retro time machine to special events, they’re renting it out through their side business: Doc’s Time Machines.
“The car is always a crowdpleaser,” she says.
Manning, who works in marketing and owns an audio-video business and car detailing shop with her husband, started Downtown Bernardsville in 2018. She says she hopes the movie event can “breathe a little life into the town” and help support the theater, albeit not through ticket sales. Goldberg says if all goes well, the screenings could open the door to similar events down the line.
Manning notes that “Back to the Future” nostalgia and appreciation never seems to wane, with new toys from the films still making their way into stores. (Marty McFly and Doc Brown costumes often make an appearance during Halloween.) She says the theater week is proving to be one of the more popular activities the nonprofit has organized during the pandemic.
The theater lobby will have a mini museum with real props from the film sets, like Marty’s hoverboard from future Hill Valley, Doc Brown’s remote control from the first movie, his bullet-pierced Old West hat from “Back to the Future Part III" and a watch used in the second movie.
“Back to the Future” screenings will take place at Bernardsville Cinema at 4, 6:30 and 9 p.m. through Sat., Oct. 24. Manning says it will be possible to watch all three movies in one sitting (be sure to reserve six hours, if so). For passes ($10 to $15), visit downtownbernardsville.com/events.
