Opinion | Poll: Majority supports Trump’s decision to not strike back against Iran - Politico

An overwhelming majority of voters support President Donald Trump’s decision to not pursue military action against Iran last week after Tehran launched a missile strike targeting two air bases in Iraq housing U.S. troops, a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll found.

The survey was conducted in the days after Trump addressed the nation in the wake of the assault on the Iraqi installations — which resulted in no American casualties — and sought to de-escalate tensions between Washington and Tehran that had steadily heightened since late last month.

Seventy-one percent of those surveyed in the poll said they approved of Trump’s decision to not attack Iran, with 43 percent “strongly” approving and 28 percent “somewhat” approving. Only 14 percent disapproved of the president’s decision, and 15 percent said they did not know or had no opinion.

While Trump declined to announce further armed conflict during his televised remarks from the White House last Wednesday, he said his administration would “immediately impose additional punishing economic sanctions” on the Iranian regime in response to Tehran’s aggression.

A majority of voters, 58 percent, approved of Trump’s decision to level the new sanctions against Iran, according to the poll, and 22 percent disapproved.

The president also said he planned to ask NATO to “become much more involved in the Middle East process,” a move supported by 59 percent of survey respondents and disapproved of by 20 percent.

The Iranian missile salvo represented an act of retaliation against the U.S. after Trump early this month authorized the killing of Tehran’s top military commander in an overnight American drone strike near Baghdad’s international airport.

Forty-nine percent of poll respondents said they approved of Trump’s order to strike Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the leader of Iran’s elite paramilitary Quds Force, and 39 percent disapproved of the attack.

The U.S.-Iran relationship remains significantly strained despite Trump’s declaration that “the United States is ready to embrace peace with all who seek it,” as well as other rhetoric aimed at tamping down the potential for increased hostilities following last week’s missile strike.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned in a speech in the holy city of Qom that “such military actions are not enough” of a punishment for the U.S., and a senior commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards has also threatened that his nation would extract “harsher revenge soon.”

Still, more voters than not believe it is unlikely the U.S. and Iran will engage in all-out war anytime soon. Slightly more than one-in-three voters, 37 percent, said it is “very” or “somewhat” likely the U.S. will go to war with Iran in the next month, while 27 percent said the prospect is “somewhat unlikely” and 22 percent called it “very unlikely.”

Tyler Sinclair, Morning Consult's vice president, said the recent tensions with Iran had caused an uptick in the percentage of voters who ranked security issues — including terrorism, foreign policy and border security — as top of mind ahead of the 2020 elections.

“Although concerns about war with Iran are waning, our polling suggests voters are paying more attention to national security issues as the election year heats up,” Sinclair said. “Security issues now track as the number one issue with voters.”

Trump’s approval rating in the survey was 43 percent, up slightly from 41 percent last week. A majority of voters, 54 percent, disapproved of the president’s job performance.

Similarly, the percentage of voters who would approve of the Senate removing Trump from office in the upcoming impeachment trial ticked down from 51 percent last week, to 49 percent in the new poll. Forty-four percent of voters said they would disapprove of the Senate convicting Trump.

The POLITICO/Morning Consult poll was conducted Jan. 10-12, surveying 1,996 registered voters. The margin of sampling error is 2 percentage points.
