Dodgers 6, Rockies 5: Back and forth game ends with the Dodgers on top - Purple Row

In a game that seemed very fitting for this wild series, there were plenty of strange occurrences to be had in this 6-5 Dodgers victory. There was a fountain mishap that caused a delay, a robbed homer that turned into an inside-the-park home run, a finger nail polish delay, and two Rockies had to leave the game with injuries. There were, however, no cat sightings on this Saturday night affair. The Rockies did continue to show that they can hang with the Dodgers, keeping another game competitive and forcing manager Dave Roberts to utilize closer Kenley Jansen for a five out save.

Jon Gray looks sharp

In his 2021 debut, Jon Gray gave up just four hits and one run in his 5+ innings of work before being pulled due to injury in the sixth inning. Gray had all of his stuff working and looked sharp, striking out seven Dodgers and inducing five groundouts. Of course, as luck would have it, full-body cramping (thankfully nothing worse) would sideline him and the rest of the sixth inning played out in snake bit fashion.

Top of the sixth troubles

Yency Almonte came on in relief of Gray after a leadoff double and would retire the first two hitters he faced before inducing a soft liner that landed just in front of the shifted Josh Fuentes in the typical short stop position. This was one of those times when the shift backfires as Fuentes is used to relying on split-second reactions playing on the corners and there is a lot more time to think when playing short stop. He ultimately played himself into an in-between hop that he booted. The play was ruled a hit, but was definitely a play that a major league ball player should be expected to make. Almonte unraveled a bit after that and three runs would ultimately score in the inning for the Dodgers.

Josh Fuentes ties the game up late

Fuentes drove the ball into the bullpen to make up for his earlier miscue and tie the game up with a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh. For Fuentes, it was his first homer of the year and it came on the same day that his famous cousin hit his first with his new team. The infielder continues to establish himself as an asset to this team and is taking full opportunity of the Brendon Rodgers injury to take hold of the starting infield job.

Raimel Tapia and the left field wall

For the second time in three games, Tapia leaped to potentially rob a home run at the wall. This time, he had the ball in the webbing and the ball bounced back into the field of play as he slammed into the wall. Tapia would remain down, and eventually leave the game after suffering whiplash, not realizing the ball was in play and Zach McKinstry came all the way around for an inside the park home run to give the Dodgers the lead in the eighth. This would lead to the first of two runs given up by Mychal Givens in his one inning of work as he continues to struggle in a Rockies uniform.

Next up

The Rockies and Dodgers will complete their four-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1:10 p.m. MDT. The Dodgers will send young lefty Julio Urías to the mound to face Rockies newcomer Austin Gomber. Acquired in the Nolan Arenado trade, Gomber will make his Rockies debut and look to show the Rockies fanbase that the trade wasn’t all bad. He looked solid in spring training and will try to build on that into the regular season.
