Game 1: RIT 6, Union 2
Offensively, Union College was only able to score two runs and total seven hits. Senior Joey Palko and first-year Noah Schott led the way with multiple-hit games for the Dutchmen as they went 2-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively.
Union's offense was unable to string together hits when they needed to, leaving 10 men on base. At the end of the first inning, Union led 1-0 after senior Jack Koch scored on a ground-out and RBI by classmate Kevin Chaimowitz.
Union could not score in the second or third innings and saw RIT score three times to take a 3-1 lead after 3 innings. In the bottom of the fourth, senior Matt Toy singled to score classmate William Bellamy, who reached base on a hit-by-pitch. The rest of the scoring was done by RIT in the top half of the fifth inning on a three-run home run.
In the first decision of his career, first-year Bryce Fournier (0-1) suffered the loss in 4.2 innings of work. Fournier showed solid command by only walking one batter, but allowed 10 hits and six earned runs. Sophomore Matt Beazoglou came in for relief and pitched 1.1 innings, giving up one hit and two walks. To finish the game, sophomore Harry Azadian looked strong, as he faced three batters, giving up no hits in an inning of work.
Game 2: Union 12, RIT 3
The second game of the double-header was a different story, as Union exploded offensively for 12 runs and 17 hits while sophomore Ben Mlavsky shut down the RIT lineup through six innings to earn the win.
Senior Elias Kuhns had a big game at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a homer, two RBIs and two runs scored. Toy had a pair of hits and drove in two runs, while Palko added two hits, two runs scored and three RBIs to his excellent day.
After both teams went scoreless through the first two innings, Kuhns led off the third inning with a single up the middle. Two batters later, Koch's RBI single ignited a string of three straight hits including an RBI double by Palko and a run-scoring single by Kelly. By the end of the third, Union led 3-0.
In the fourth inning, Union continued to swing it well, sending 11 batters to the plate. Palko had the big hit of the inning with a two-run single, while Chaimowitz also singled home a run and Schott added an RBI groundout.
In the top of the fifth, RIT responded with a run, but Kuhns got that run back and more in the bottom half by sending a ball soaring over the right field fence which allowed Union to take a commanding 9-1 lead. In the sixth inning, Kelly scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Toy to extend the lead to 10-1.
Union scored their last two runs in the 8th frame on three hits. Union used three pinch hitters in the inning including sophomore Jack Davis, who led off with a single, and classmate Dan Choate, who plated Davis with a double to left field.
Mlavsky (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win in dominating fashion. The sophomore gave up six hits in six innings, striking out five and allowing only one run. First-year Kyle Patlove pitched two innings in relief and only gave up one hit, while classmate Deven Smith pitched the ninth.
Union will return to action next weekend for a four-game series with Skidmore College, beginning with two games at Shuttleworth Park on Saturday starting at noon.
