HAMDEN — Sleeping Giant State Park was closed Saturday afternoon as law enforcement investigated a “suspicious item” that was later determined to be a geocache, according to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
DEEP officials announced the park’s closure on Twitter at 4:26 p.m.
Will Healey, a spokesman with DEEP, said Environmental Conservation police, along with Hamden officers and Connecticut State Police, were investigating a “suspicious item.”
“There is no public safety concern at this time,” said Healey.
Hamden police Capt. Ronald Smith said the item was on a ledge away from walking trails. Connecticut State Police were attempting to identify and remove it, he said.
Healey said at 9:10 p.m. that the item was determined to be a geocache.
